Halak in a Hawks' uniform would be great. But, I think that at this moment, Halak might be really hard for Gainey to let go since we're in the middle of a race for the playoffs. It has to be a really huge deal so Gainey would consider it no? By the way, I like to idea too of getting Kyle Beach.

I like this one, even the Sopel throw-in is nice because he shoots right handed. I wouldn't like it if I were a Hawk fan though.

Its a huge salary dump for the Hawks. I don't think the Habs can even accommodate a trade like that unless they are able to dump Hammer.

Which is another way of saying that he can't trade Halak, then.

Granted, the clock could strike midnight at any time. But Halak is giving us the Theodore Hart run kind of heroics right now. As was already posted, he is keeping the Habs from being a lottery team, the way the team is playing in front of him.

Anyway, a Habs-Hawks deal continues to be rendered difficult by the salary constraints that both teams are under. Habs can't really afford to take on salary for next season. But the Hawks can't take back any salary balancers from us either.

As for Price, I would submit that he has played well enough this year to be considered a #1 goalie by many teams. It's not his fault that Halak has gone to another level. But as Jakomyte says, there is no real reason for the Habs to trade either of them this year.

This is why i really doubt Gainey trades either Price or Halak prior to the deadline. He will most likely move one of them in the off-season if he feels he is unable to get Halak (or Price) to re-sign.

It would have to be a crazy proposal to get Halak traded prior to the deadline. A proposal that would save Gainey's job after we plummet.

I guess my thought would be this...

Price (for whatever reason) seems to be Gainey's boy. Price played well when it was the Huet/Price tandem...and with Huet having 2 more years left...it buys more time for Price to get better.

So that "swap" would be Huet (5.625) for Hamrlik (5.5)...the bloated contract trade.

Then it becomes Halak for Barker.....maybe the Hawks add a prospect in there as well...Skille/Aliu/Crawford.....something like that?

Not like anyone listens to these boards anyway....I just wouldnt give up the Byfuglien, Ladd, Pick, etc.....all for Halak.

1 for 1 maybe....but not more than that.

Doesn't quite work that way. Price is a starting goaltender and right now has far better stats than Huet (in terms of save percentage). In fact Price stole the starting job from Huet which is why we traded him for a 2nd round pick.

So in your trade we would have Huet as a 5+ million dollar back up goaltender. Hammer while overpaid is our 2nd best d-man and eats up 24 minutes / game.

Swapping Hammer for Huet would be career suicide for Gainey.

The thing is, we don't have to trade Halak. So if Chicago wants him, they have to make it worth Montreal's while. And any proposal involving Huet is an obvious non-starter.

Huet is virtually untradable. Any trade involving Huet must have Gomez coming back in return (with one of your centerman going our way). In other words its a non-starter!

He's a steady presence on our blueline and moves the puck well. He is no longer a point producer. He's more of an overpaid stay at home d-man who can rush the puck when needed. His salary should be 4 million/year.

Not gonna happen.

putting sopel on waivers is fine

someone will pay 2 million for a shot blocking defensemen that sticks up for his teammates

Not that Halak is likely to be traded, especially to the Hawks, but I found this comment curious. How would Halak make both Hawk goalies expendable? Huet sure, he has a contract he's not worth, but Niemi has played great for us and he's not someone the organization will be looking to part with anytime soon.

We have too many d-men as it is:

Markov
Hammer
Spacek
Gorges
Gill
OByrne
Mara
MAB (playing as a forward due to the depth).

We have Subban and Weber ready to contribute next season.

The only way we take on Barker is if a d-man goes the other way. Like Hal Gill as a salary dump.

the one person i wouldnt, and i doubt the hawks do, trade is beach

he's been on FIRE in the whl.. ranking in the top 7 in goals..

i would say the player available for the deadline would be:

Barker
Versteeg
Ladd
Huet (won't get trade but you all know he's available)
Sopel
Sharp (i'm putting him near the bottom because i dont think he's going to get traded)

No to versteeg due to his pint-size. (we have too many smurfs)
No to Sopel. (We have too many #5/6 d-men)
No to Barker unless the Habs can pawn Hal "skill" Gill the other way.
Huet is a HUGE No.
Sharp? We don't have the cap-room.

I believe you mean Spacek, who is a worse defenseman on a bigger contract.

How about:

To Hawks: Price + Andrei Kostitsyn + Spacek
To Habs: Byfuglien + Barker + 2nd + Niemi
