And yet MDZ still succeeds. Imagine if we had Schoenfield as an assistant back there to teach this kid defensive positioning ?

This kid is a phenom.
we do, dont we? i thought he was at every practice working specifially with the young defensemen

DZ's cooled down a bit partially because a lot of times he's looking tired.

That's what happens when we can't bench him because we only have 6 defensemen!

Most people who thought he'd stay expected 20-25 points from him this season. He's already at the high end of expectations and will probably be in the 30s at the season's end. That's excellent for a teenager. I am very happy with his offensive production.

Why can't we call up Heineken and rotate them at least until the Olympic break, which should be plenty of rest for MDZ.

No point now, there's 4 games to go until the break, and dz's not playing in the olympics.

He should've been benched for a few games in january.. Maybe on a schedule like play 4, sit 1. He should've sat the games where we played on back to back days, that probably would've been best.

Even vets have a hard time going full steam ahead for 82 games. I don't expect that from a rookie.

Yes, Shoenfeld is an assistant coach and works with the defenseman.

I'm also not sure why Tortorella "isn't good at nurturing young players". Other than maybe giving Del Zotto too many minutes, I think we've mostly heard some good things about how he deals with someone like Del Zotto. One on one coaching from him and the assistants, showing plenty of confidence in him, etc. Don't really know what you want

The only criticism here should be towards Ranger management and their decision to keep MDZ in NY at age 19 (I decision which I supported then and continue to support now).

Once that decision was made, we just need to live with the mistakes a 19 year old D is going to make. Not a high price to pay with someone of MDZ's potential.

In the same vein and in regards to Gilroy, whom I have been disappointed with. Here again, my unhappiness is not with him but with Ranger management who judged him NHL ready when he was still at B.U. The Rangers missed the boat here...I don't think that Gilroy will ever be a quality NHL D because he is just not physically strong enough. At age 25 he is fully mature physically. The fault here is not with him (and I applaud him for at least holding his own) but with management for once again making an error in player evaluation.

Leave MDZ alone!

Hes 19. 19!!!

What were you guys doing at 19?

I was drunk in my dormroom with a bong near my bed...MDZ is in the midst of a full NHL schedule on a bad team.

The kids gonna be really, really good and the points will come.

Actually, you know why we can't do that?

Because we're pressed up against the cap with only 22 players on our roster.

im not worried about DZ offensive game, im more worried about his defensive one. he's been pretty bad lately, getting beat on almost every play and almost completely stopped throwing the body

"hyperbole much?" translates to "saying he gets beat on "ALMOST EVERY play" and has "ALMOST COMPLETELY stopped throwing the body" is a huge exaggeration."

Better?

I'm getting sick of this place. He's 19. He ain't no Crosby. He wasn't expected to be this good as a rookie.

Please, this is ridiculous. DZ is one of the few bright spots on the Rangers. I much rather read 100 bash Drury threads then this, cause at least that have some basis. Comparing him to Staal isn't fair, cause Staal is 23. 4 years is a huge deal when you consider that that is more than 20% of DZ's whole life.

By the way, this has to be the best picture of Staal

DZ's a 19-year-old rookie going through growing pains. Staal is in his 3rd season and is offense is finally breaking out.

To put things in perspective, Mike Green had just 12 points in 70 games in 2006-07 when he was 21-years-old. We need to exercise patience.

I somewhat disagree... Doughty went right to the NHL right after the draft.... If I am not mistaken, MDZ played one more year of junior hockey after he was drafted... This seems to a big difference getting one year more to develop in juniors and etc instead of going right into the NHL....

One thing that confuses me is how did MDZ not make the Canada for the WJC last year?

What's with your man's hair? Goes from carrot top, to bleach blond, to a dark red type color or something.
