Hurricanes at Sabres

AT
7:30 Puck drop

The amazing January has turned into the craptastic February and the team once again looks much like they have re-embraced the suck. Combine this with the hot streak the Oilers are on, and we are only 3 points out of last place. Heartbreakingly, there is no local tv for this one. However, once you have loaded up on your meds, the Slug's announcer guys don't sound too bad...

The primary focus of our attention tonight: Ryan Miller

Solving this yellow fellow can be a real problem. There is a possibility that Coach Mo will send Gritty Guy AWardo down to help the Slugs on defense. With Miller distracted by the pylon presence, it should be much easier to sneak some pucks in on him...

Let's hope the boys come out looking different than the Alberta Hurricanes. After the fainting goat let in 5 consecutive 3rd period goals to the Slugs earlier this season, it would be nice to salt the slug tonight.

Edit- Cam Ward is out with an injury. Manny will be in goal and Peters will be on the bench. I can see this going good considering Manny shouldn't be the least bit rusty...

Any fan who wants this team to tank needs to turn in their fan-card immediately and go cheer for another team.

That said: Go Canes, beat the 'Nannerslugs.

No Local TV means stuck with RJ. I can't stand RJ, he's horrible and makes my ears bleed. I'll be relying on the tweeter world for this one.

I might be willing to even turn the radio and listen to Chuck, but with no new players in the line up, which I was hoping for, this is a game I don't have to pay attention to.

I do hope we beat them. Nothing would be finer than to see these assclowns get beat by a bottom dweller named the Canes.

not true. I've been a season ticket holder since '01, and I want what's best for this team given the current scenario. what's best for this franchise is to get a top pick, not to win a bunch of games, and finish 11th in the conference. So, since the playoffs are nearly a mathematical impossibility, how is it not in the best interest of the team (long term) to tank?

thanks for playing.

We wont be making the trek to Buffalo for this game, which is really a bummer for me, but the risk of going into labor is way too high, hahaha.

I vote for not getting into a debate about what constitutes a true fan in the GDT.

What's best for the team and "what constitutes a true fan" are not the same thing. It may be in the team's best interest to tank but IMO, if you're cheering for the team to lose (which does not necessarily mean not being upset when they lose. I mean actively cheering for Ward/Legace to allow a goal or for Staal etc to not score) I think that's pretty pathetic and doesn't make you a real fan.

But this really isn't the thread for that topic.

I hope we lose and I hope whatever we do from now until the end of the season results in a top 2-3 pick. Take that for whatever it's worth. Good fan or not. As JR kindly put it, the last time we got a top pick, it resulted in a franchise player and today our Captain, which also resulted in a Stanley Cup. Of course it's not written in stone that we get that elite of a prize again, but at this point I will take my chances given the current situation of the team. We're in this hole so in my mind let's make the best of it. If losing the majority of the 20+ remaining games like we did the first 50+ makes that goal more attainable in the next couple/few years and beyond, bring it.

With that said, we all have our views and opinions on this and they aren't all the same nor are they agreed upon. To each their own, it is what it is.

Leaving most of the rest of it aside, you can't just say the pick of Staal resulted in a Stanley Cup. Sure, without him the cup wouldn't be in Raleigh, but then without Ward (25th overall), a couple guys having career years and the new NHL as a result of the lockout, the Canes don't win a Stanley Cup either.

Absolutely, and Eric was a tremendous part of it and it can be argued we wouldn't have won without him, or many others on that team for that matter. It is what it is, no need to get into the nitty-gritty of it all. You can't sit here and do that or you'll disect each and every move from Williams, Stillman, Cullen, Commodore, way back to Hedican and A. Ward, etc.. it's useless to talk about.

I think my point was easy enough to take. However I'll re-phrase that and say, that pick helped result in a Stanley Cup Championship.

Look for A.Ward to have his first good game of the season tonight, posting 0 goals, 0 assists, 1 shot on goal, and only a -3 rating. The Sabres will be like "ZOMG Ward is so awesome!" and will sacrifice a 3rd round pick for his "services." Then Ward will go back to tank mode and sabotage the Sabres, causing them to miss the playoffs.

I agreed with that part. Staal was a huge part of the cup.

Which will cause a giant rip in the space-time continuum, which in turn will nullify both of their no-trade clauses

Why in the world does it matter if we (the fans) want to tank? The players have way too much pride to ever let that happen. They aren't just going to roll over and die. What we want is irrelevant.

I always enjoy seeing the Canes win, but I won't mind seeing us lose since it's been clear for awhile we weren't going to make the playoffs and that any loss inches us closer to drafting an exciting franchise player.

I say EVERY fan is a good fan! Whether you're gung-ho one game or all season, I don't knock anyone. One-gamers sometimes turn into STHs ... I think it's happening to me (despite this crappy year!) It's a professional sport and a business, taking people's money. All paying customers are entitled to "be themselves and express their opinions."

LET'S GO, CANES!!!

Looking at the depth chart on the main site here's what we got.

Wallin back in. Corvo out (why ain't Gritty Veteran AWard sitting)
Boychuk with Sutter and Dwyer
Peters backing Legace

Edit: Forslund just said Wallin is the scratch tonight. Still my question stays, why ain't Gritty Veteran AWard sitting?

Looks like Peters will be getting his first NHL action tonight, update from Chip:

Quote:
Manny Legace just taken to the locker room in apparent distress by trainers.

Legace fell over in the crease and had to be attended to. He was bent over as he was taken to the bench area.
Hope he's okay.
