Dan Hamhuis

From ESPN's rumor section:

Quote:
The Nashville Predators wants to keep Dan Hamhuis, but ESPN.com's Scott Burnside reports that they may not be able to accomodate his demands regarding the money or the length of the deal.
His current cap hit is 2 mil and his salary is 2.5 mil.

What are the chances that we could work out a Rozsival for Hamhuis deal?

Rozsival only has 2 years left at an average salary of 3.5 mil. I'm not sure how much money/years Hamhuis is looking for, but maybe Rozy would end up being a cheaper option for them.

They have Weber and Suter, so Rozy could slot in on the 2nd pair where he belongs.

For our part, if Hamhuis wants too much we can just let him go and then we've got cap space for next year.

Thoughts?

No clue really, other than he plays about 21 minutes a night, 3rd on defense behind Weber and Suter. Pretty decent offensively. He had 38 points in 05-06 and has been in the 20s the last 3 years. On pace for 21 points this year.

ASSETS: Can play a sound defensive game, log big minutes and also be used in a shutdown role. Moves the puck well out of the defensive zone. Has loads of hockey sense.

FLAWS: Isn't a physical defenseman, which somewhat limits his effectiveness against big NHL forwards. Is also a limited contributor in the offensive zone.

CAREER POTENTIAL: Big-minute defenseman.

Hamhuis may be better, IDK, but that doesn't help us cap-wise. He will almost certainly cost more than Girardi. We need to shed salary, not take it on.

This is true, but looking at it from Nashville's perspective, I think they would find Girardi more appealing than Rozsival, especially if they are concerned about money.

After this season, Rozy has $7 million in actual salary to be paid out. I highly doubt Girardi's actual salary would be that much for the next 2 years. Probably more in the ballpark of $5.5-6 million.

I'd swap Girardi for Hamhuis in a heart beat. He's a much better skater, Dan is.

Just flip Girardi for a pick and bring up Heikkinen for the rest of the season.

I'd complain that Hamhuis is another non-physical defenseman and better yet still not even a point-getter, but this year is completely lost in my eyes and I only care about dismantling most of our team for 2010 cap space.

Rozsival <--> Hamhuis = Thumbs Up

dan is much better...at everything...that's easy to say if you don't specify which 'dan'.

I live in Nashville and go to some Preds game - Hamhuis is a solid d-man, doesn't make mistakes, can be physical and isn't out of position too often.

I agree with your assessment, I think the scouting report about Hamhuis not being physical is a little off.

He's a solid hipchecker and is capable of making some big hits.

How does trading Girardi for a rental help the Rangers? Why would the Rangers make that trade?

If his salary demands aren't too crazy and the Rangers have some cap room, Anton Volchenkov would fit in prefectly.

Girardi is around the top in the league in hits the last few years so i'm not sure where this "Girardi is soft" stuff started. Or we still on the Gaborik fight?
