In years where the Canes are a playoff-bound team, I think his amount of starts are by no means "overworking." However, in a suck year such as this, there's no reason for him to play in 21 straight games.

He's going to be observed by doctor's for a couple of weeks. Sounds like they don't quite know how to handle this yet.

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/...r-couple-weeks

Quote:
Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today that the doctors treating Cam Ward's back injury want to observe him for a couple of weeks before making a decision on how to best move forward.

"After a couple of weeks they'll have a better understanding of his condition," Rutherford said. "They'd like to see how it settles down, then go from there."

Rutherford said surgery could "not be ruled in or ruled out."

Ward began experiencing back pain in the Canes' game Wednesday in Calgary. His back tightened up Thursday during the team flight to Buffalo, and Ward left the team Friday to return to Raleigh.

Ward has been slowed by back spasms in the last year, including the Eastern Conference finals during the Stanley Cup playoffs last season, but Rutherford has said this was a different kind of back injury.

This sucks in a big way, but if it had to happen, now is the time... Let's just hope there is no long term problems.

agreed about the timing.
however, it's something that is pretty scary, given the long-term deal he just signed.
at the time, it looked like the right move, but now....
obviously, giving wardo time to heal makes the most sense of all the options.

they just need to shut him down for the year, see how Peters does and hope that they finish in the bottom 2 in the league. Lets be honest, there is no reason to finish in 10 in the conference. That does you no good whatsoever. If you are going to miss the playoffs, be really bad. It is better for your franchise long term.

Next year, they can hopefully have Ward and Peters both up with the big club, or if Peters does well, they have another chip to trade. Hopefully with a couple of months off Cam will be back to good health.

I agree with the above poster regarding the fact that there is absolutely no reason for Cam to start 21 consecutive games. That is just ridiculous. When we are this bad he should play no more than 60 games in a season.

Carolina Canes fan here, and not for the reasons you may think. No, it isn't because of Eric Staal, because I have had him in my fantasy league since he was a rookie, or the fact I I just traded for Cam Ward. Or because they had their 06 Cup win, even though I watched pretty much every Canes game in the Buffalo and Edmonton series. It's because of Ron Francis (former Pen and my 2nd favorite all-time player to Mario Lemieux), and Hartford's history. As a kid, I loved the Whalers. Francis, Verbeek, and, well, I can go on, but I have school work, 40 minute cardio, and bed, so I'll cut it short.

What do you feel is the severity of Ward's condition? I can't see what could have caused his sore back, has he had a history of this? I read in August during training camp he experienced soreness. Anyway, whatever you guys, granted we know so little at this moment, would be helpful. Does anyone know how he originally caused this problem?

Peters was sent back to the AHL. I imagine thats only since there is the Olympic break in the NHL and he'll be called back to backup or platoon Legace right? How has Peters looked in his first few games?

Outstanding. It's too early to see how he will do over his career to say the least, but he's been great in both games he's played and arguably deserved a shutout in both. He'll be back up after the Olympic break, and they'll likely keep platooning him and Legace as much as possible until one or the other gets cold.

This sounds like good news: http://blogs.newsobserver.com/canes/...rn-this-season

Quote:
While saying there is no set timetable for a return, Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today that goaltender Cam Ward could be back in net this season.

Ward, sidelined since Feb. 3 with a back problem, returned to a back specialist in Charlotte this week. Rutherford said surgery will not be required.

"We're real encouraged with the progress he's making," Rutherford said. "He has been feeling much better in the last week. We'll see where he is in the next week or two.

"When this first happened, we felt he may not play again this year. Based on how he feels now, and the progress he's made, he could play in a few weeks. But we will not push it by any means."

Glad to hear they're not going to push it. I hope they realize now that there's no reason to start him for 25 straight games. It's just stupid.

I am impressed that this last bit of information on Ward has not received as much attention as other news. Perhaps its the break? People arent roaming these boards until the NHL resumes?

It's the break, and quite frankly a lot of us don't care how many weeks. We're a lottery team right now, and the only thing people really care about is having Ward fully healthy for next year. I'm sorry if he's on your fantasy team, but keeping out for the rest of the season would probably be fine with most here.

I know most around here would rather Ward sit out the next few weeks rehabing his back so that he's back playing at 100% next season. The difference between being a borderline playoff team and a bottom feeder in the league right now is extremely slim, and most of us are fairly confident that Ward is good enough to be the difference there when he's healthy.

Well, to be quite honest this isn't much news to me. I figured Ward would be back sometime after the Olympic break (unless it was much, much worse), and we still really don't know any details of how soon or how often.

I'm still worried that they'll bring him back in and overwork him. So I'm taking more of a "I'll believe it when I see it" approach.

You guys are only 9pts away from 8th place. And you guys were playing great before the break...while the teams in front of you not so great. I know it would be really hard to make it, but its not out of question.. At least not mathematically right? The east is so tight after the 7th place. A great string of victories could really shock people. Only ~20 games left though... and having 3 games against the Caps and 2 against the Pens doesn't help much. You do have 2 games against 8th place Habs though.

It's not out of the question, but it seems much less probable with the departure of Nik Wallin and Matt Cullen, coupled with the impending trade of Ray Whitney. And it's possible that they will lose another regular before the deadline passes.

any chance of seeing Ward in nets this week, or will they keep him out because of his back?

done for awhile.

Peters was called up yesterday. I would not expect to see Ward for a few weeks

Unless we get to within 3 pts or so of 8th. When the playoffs are on the line, you play through injury, you come back early from injury.

Some even come back from a broken neck!
