That was out of necessity, though. If Doug Weight doesn't go down, Erik Cole doesn't play in those last two games (at least I don't think so).

Point taken. Still, if we get close...it would be tempting to get Ward back ASAP. I'm sure he'd be eager to get back in net.

I think 3-4 pts out of 8th would be the threshhold.

I don't think that would be a good idea. His injury is very serious and for us to throw him into the most competitive time of the year, the stretch run and playoffs if we made them, would be stupid. The islanders just showed us what rushing a goalie back can do. Let's handle our situation a little better.

Besides, we'd just get killed in the first round anyways this year. Worth risking Ward's future for that?

What I mean is that back injuries are not to be taken lightly. They can become chronic problems that will bug you for life. I don't want to rush him back like the isles did with their glass man, DiPietro.

I disagree with this. When have they ever gotten killed in the first round? If they did make it, they'd be on an insane run and face Washington/Pittsburgh/New Jersey/Buffalo or maybe even Ottawa. The only team that really scares me is Pittsburgh.

Well...I'm just saying that, should we find ourselves 4 pts out of 8th with a reasonable number of games remaining...the formula would become a lot more complicated regarding Ward and whether he should return. Probably not, as you say, but it seems like such a longshot right now.

But if that gap were to shrink...things change. The whole complexion of the issue would change.

Disagree. Who's going to finish #1? Washington? They are a train wreck waiting to happen. If we beat Boston last year, we can definitely take the Caps this year. If it's the Devils? You better believe we're winning that series.

Exactly. Pittsburgh I want *no* part of.

But can you imagine a rematch of last year's series? Right now it seems so very far away and so far-fetched. But it's not impossible. Not yet.

Ward (back) could start taking shots next week, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports.

Recommendation: Ward is not paying dividends for those who drafted him with an early pick in fantasy leagues. He labored through an ugly 13-game losing streak between October 10 and December 11, and has dealt with serious injuries to his leg and back. If Ward is able to return before the break -- something that has yet to be determined -- it might be difficult for him to find any kind of groove that will lend you a helping hand in fantasy leagues. Justin Peters and Manny Legace are the netminders holding down the fort with Ward on the mend.

I kind of doubt we'll see Ward again this year. If I were the coaching staff, and by some miracle Carolina squeezed into the playoffs, I might consider it. But the way things are going, he's going to be way more valuable to them as 100% healthy next season than less so this season.

Yeah you are absolutely right. Like I said earlier, though...if we got within 3-4 pts of 8th it would become a more complicated issue for everyone involved.

I doubt we will have to worry about that. With Gleason out, Alex Picard is the 3rd most seasoned D-man on the team. Leapfrogging 6 teams seems pretty unlikely in that scenario.

If we win out, it's only 90 points... We are done... That loss to Boston was it... if we win that game, we're out 4 and have a good shot, but losing to them was the nail

Hmmm today's result makes worrying about that a little closer.

You are most likely right. But it's still mathematically possible. In fact we're not even in the realm of mathematics yet. It could still happen.

It would seem like it going by past trends, but the East this year is historically lousy. With the gap having decreased rapidly over the past weeks and Boston being really, really pale these days... could easily be a season where a really low number gets you in. Them going 0.500 the rest of the way means 86 points....
Carry on with the big guns slaying until the double header with Atlanta, and suddenly you can be right there.

Imagine that final game if its a one or the other situation. Kinda like a game 7 repeat. Canes at Boston.

Anyway, its a cool story line and you have to respect the Canes for the cojones they're showing.

Any news on Manny? As in is Tripp Tracy going to suit up as the back up tonight since all the AHL goalies are hurt too?

what are the FA goalies that would be available for some sort of a 10 game contract? is that even a possibility?

I wouldn't be surprised to see them go with Legace as a backup and just hope that Peters doesn't get injured. Especially if we haven't heard anything by now.

From what John said on the post-game show it seemed minor, that they were planning on using Legace as the backup tonight anyway, and they were just hoping that there was no significant swelling between leaving the arena and game time just in case they need him.

How the hell are Pogge and Murphy both hurt?

I guess Manny can sit on the bench and we can pray that Buffalo doesn't go to town on Peters.

This is what keeps me going with this team. They have really shown a remarkable level of determination, especially compared to some of the teams around them in the standings.
