GDT - Hurricanes vs Islanders - Feb 6, 2010

The Canes land their boat on the Island having bailed enough water out of it in Buffalo to keep it afloat. Justin Peters gets his first ever start in an NHL net tonight, so that should be of interest for the die-hard fans. After a nice play to set up Aaron Ward's goal last night, Zack Boychuck remains with the team, so we'll hope for an encore performance.

Will Whitney and/or Wallin play? Relative to the misery that comes with a losing season, these are some of the most enjoyable times...when you don't know who will be playing, and there's excitement about new faces in the lineup. We're sure to see more of that in the coming days/weeks, and the new blood will make for good theater.

This game is on FS-Carolinas, sandwiched in between two non-TVed games, so make sure you take advantage.

PS: Those of you people who aren't "real fans" will be glad to know that I'm winless in starting the GDT.

Noticed that Erik Cole was listed in the line-up on the Hurricanes' website. Don't know if that had already been addressed.

How do you feel about doing the remaining 14 games after this one?

Islanders are getting to close to us for my liking. Thrashers may free fall. Oilers are tanking as their players look to have completely given up. Many of their real.. or not real fans want it that way, for obvious reasons. Who knows whats going to happen with Toronto & Columbus.

P.S. - Just lose.

I didn't get to watch last night's game, but did see the highlights. One thing that stood out on every Buffalo goal was how bad the Canes' coverage in the defensive zone was. Really bad. Pitkanen and Ward as a pairing were particularly bad..but it looked like quite a bad team effort to be honest.

Maybe because I just saw highlights and lowlights I only saw the worst of it. Was the coverage better the rest of the game?

Peters is looking good so far. He's handling himself pretty well.

Have we had a legitimate scoring chance yet?

Staal attempted a wrap-around. Does that count?

Only if it was his 200th attempt of the season.

Jussi's goal will count though.

Jussi from Pitkanen and Whitney? Or Staal?

so was it just me, or did peters acually look real good out there? He looked solid on the post, quick on the pipe-to-pipe movement.....only thing i didnt like was his grahame-like drifting.

I agree. He looked really solid positionally and used his size very well. I also agree about his blind puck-hunting adventures. Barrasso needs to nip that in the bud.

Liked the look of Peters and kept noticing Gleason doing all the right things. Tripp had a brutal period.

I rather liked his comparison of the patience of Peters to the....non-patience of DiPietro.

I really like what I'm seeing out of Peters, he's very aggressive compared to Wardo. For the kid's NHL debut, he has been very aggressive and challenging very well.

How did we get the Juice for Brookbank, Melichar and a 4th? I understand the situation but I can't get over we got Jussi ****ing Jokinen for MELICHAR! Man, I can't get enough of the Juice.

Peters is pretty damn good. Good angles on the plays, great athleticism for such a big guy, reads the play well (quick freezes on the PK there), doesn't wander too much from the crease to cut down the attack but still challenges the shooters, unlike a certain other big goalie that played for Albany that used to be a Cane. Not sure he's starter material at any point, but if he is consistent enough he'll make a great backup as soon as next season.

Mark Streit looked Aaron Ward like on that penalty.
