Well they're probably not far apart in age, but I say if Sam ever does hang 'em up go after the best, Jim Hughson of Hockey Night in Canada. That is the pre-eminent broadcast position in all of hockey, so he probably wouldn't leave, but if Dolan opens up the wallet, you never know...
Its gonna be Howie Rose, Kenny Albert or someone completely new we never heard of before. John Giannone is only used because he is already on staff and costs nothing to bring in. They used Wischusen in a similair manner. Although Wischusen does a good job with calling the jetsI found he wasnt really able to keep up with the play while calling the ranger games.
I'd love to have Gary Thorne, as he's my favorite play by play broadcaster of all time, but he's with comcast doing play by play for the Baltimore Orioles right now... one of the great benefits of center ice... when MLB starts you get extra innings heh...
Wischusen (sp?) isn't bad at all, and Mr. Mount Vancouver himself would probably be salivating at the chance to finally do play by play for the team he adores, rather than calling the action at the Loser Emporium in Uniondale.
He states the obvious; really adds nothing interesting to the intellectual hockey fan.
Then there's his homeriffic tendencies, constantly complimenting players for doing something halfway decent or expected upon them.
Positives after getting shellacked.
I've become very friendly with Giannone over the past few years and I PROMISE you that what he says on air is simply a product of him being employed by the Rangers. Chat with the guy a few times and you'll quickly see he has much different views then what he shares on air. He's also a really, really cool guy.
That being said, my choice would most definitely be Howie Rose
I really hope its Howie Rose. He's got a great voice and follows the action smoothly. Making the greatest call in Rangers history (sorry Sam) doesn't hurt either.
That said I wouldn't mind Kenny Albert, but if John Giannone get the job I will have to contemplate existence, because there could never be anything more asinine. This guy has the voice of a 13 year old and sounds like hes calling a HS game.
Every time Giannone speaks I honestly wonder how he has a job with MSG. He's gotta be married to someones sister or something.
I generally try to avoid anything that has anything to do with the Islanders, but once in a while, despite my best efforts, I won't change the channel quick enough and I'll catch a few Islanders highlights, which was the case last night...
Is it just me, or does Howie call the Isles games like he'd rather be just about anywhere else? When the Isles scored -- even the game-tying goal with time expiring -- there was this like subdued or fake excitement. I mean you can't blame the guy, just saying.
"Here we are in Philly tonight for the Rangers against the Penguins. Crosby skates in across the blue and drops it for Malkin, shot, and WHAT A SAVE by Fleury! Marc-Andre Fleury has been a giant in the Ranger net tonight! After tonight's game, the Rangers return home to face the Devils, then go to Montreal to take on the Maple Leafs."
