Olympic Hockey Discussion

I'm sure there will be threads about this on the main board but honestly I don't want to discuss it with a bunch of people I'm not familiar with. Would rather talk about it here if it's OK by the Mods. Here's the schedule and groupings:

http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic...minary-Vj.html

http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic...edule-results/

One thing jumps out at me right away: Although the groupings more or less make sense based on regional rivalries and balance, Group B is pretty harsh relatively speaking. The Russians, Czechs and Slovaks will all have a tougher run up to the medal round than the US, Canada or Sweden. Sweden's group is probably the softest. Finland always plays hella-D but they'll probably be lacking on the offensive side of the equation as they usually do. Looking at this, I kind of wish they'd do two groups of 6 instead of 3 groups of 4. Would make early round play more balanced and interesting, but I see why they don't (there are 7 teams clearly deeper than the others, so one group would by definition be tougher than the other, though maybe not drastically so).

Would you guys rather see:

Group A
Belarus
Canada
Finland
United States
Sweden
Switzerland

Group B
Czech Rep.
Germany
Latvia
Norway
Russia
Slovakia

I view Canada, Czech Rep, Russia and Sweden as being 1a teams... Finland, Slovakia, US as 1b teams, and the rest as tier 2 teams. With Germany being a little better traditionally than the other Tier 2 teams. Plus this arrangement allows for some nice historical rivalries in the prelim round.

What do you guys think?

Czech Rep is not a 1a team.

I am American, not Canadian. I love Sid and Flower (in a non-bromantic sort of way) but I want them to lose in Vancouver, simple as that. Just so you know.

Czech Rep. has traditionally had some pretty deep teams. I'm thinking here not of a specific year but of going with two groups instead of 3 as a future option to make the initial rounds more challenging and interesting.

I suppose a more brutal approach would be something like this:

Group A
Belarus
Canada
Finland
Norway
Russia
US

Group B
Czech Rep.
Germany
Latvia
Slovakia
Sweden
Switzerland

But... But...

I think that the swedish team can go far this year, and personally I would count them to be an 1a team

So do I... re-read. Canada, Czech, Russia, Sweden were the teams I named 1a (most years). It's a highly scientific ranking system I use btw.

After all the nationalist trolling this site has seen this year, I'm gonna gloat like a mother if Russia AND Canada get upset. Which could be a definite possibility.

You know... I don't know why but I have a much better vibe for the US going into this tournament than I did with the underachieving all-stars we slapped together for Nagano (for example). It's not a team of super-stars but there's a lot of talent and balance that I see with this squad. All the pressure is squarely on Canada's shoulders IMO.

You mean you havent enjoyed the dozens of "Lets make 4 teams of X Country and discuss how many Cups theyd win!" and "Which team from America would play on our countries 4th line?!" threads?

We should make a game here where we all guess the amount of Freedom Candy Orpik distributes.(Thats my new favorite phrase so Ill find any reason to say it now.)

Russia, Canada and women from around the world are powerless against this duo.

Its simple but perfect.
I emailed a picture from the Pens Blog to all my co-workers.
Orpik hitting Ovi, it says "Giving Freedom Candy to the Commies since 2010"
None of them had any idea what it meant but I love it.

I think the odds are in the favor of Canada and the U.S. because of the NHL-size ice surface. The U.S. has a shot at a medal, in my opinion. The injuries on D are going to make that tough though.

I applaud your efforts. This thread has motivated me to update my avatar accordingly. I will try to fit Freedom Candy on there somehow but these damn 125x125 restrictions stifle my patriotic creativity!

Nice I like it!
I try to make sure my co-workers arent your classic un-informed semi-fans.
They should at least be semi-informed partial fans who know whats what.
