It's official: Hurricanes will open 2010-11 season in Finland

Quote:
The National Hockey League today announced that the Carolina Hurricanes are one of six teams that will open the 2010-11 regular season in Europe as part of 2010 Compuware/NHL Premiere™ and NHL Face-Off. The Hurricanes will take on the Minnesota Wild at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, on Thursday, Oct. 7 and Friday, Oct. 8. The games mark the fourth consecutive season that the NHL has started its season with games contested overseas, and the first time the Hurricanes franchise has ever played regular-season games outside of North America.
there we go.

No surprise that it's Finland, although I suppose the NHL could have screwed that up.

In addition:

The Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks will square off for two games at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, on Friday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 9.

The Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes will play each other at O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic, on Saturday, Oct. 9 and Sunday, Oct. 10.

As we knew the Finns are estatic

Would have liked this to have been another year so I might actually be able to go, but it's exciting none the less.

As neat as this is, mostly I'm just ticked I won't be able to be there... It would truly be an adventure of a lifetime...

YESSSSSSSSS! Honestly, I was hoping the Canes would do something like that, such as have a few flights and hotels at discount rates for STH's. I'm REALLY hoping this is the case because if it is I'm Finland bound.

Does anyone know what the teams from this year did for their fans?

I am honestly more worried about game tickets than getting there. Getting there is just a matter of the cost for a once in a lifetime trip. The game tickets are going to be the hardest part to obtain, in my opinion.

Great news! These are the teams Finns want to see. It'll probably be harder to get tickets than last year though. Then it was Chicago vs. Florida and everybody was like 'Ok. It's the NHL, but teams are... meh."

Both teams will get some reserved tickets for the fan packages to sell there and if they don't sell out they will be released to open tickets selling. The budget for these games are around 3 mil euros for the host (Jokerit Helsinki) so at least the Finns have to pay a lot for these games but I'm sure it will be sold out quick.

Welcome to Helsinki Rock City! And for the party people the night life is great!

^ Are those ticket prices for both games or for each game individually? Do you have a link where we can find out more information? Thanks!

I'm a Canes season ticket holder so I'm hoping we'll have an avenue to purchase tickets here through the organization. One would presume that we'll know something by the time the general tickets go on sale there, so we can plan accordingly.

Provided I can get tickets, my family will be there. Excited doesn't begin to cover it.

The tickets for both games in Helsinki went on sale in Finland this morning. I don't know if you are able to buy tickets through the Hurricanes organization, but a Finnish online ticket office Lippu.fi seems to be able to deliver bought tickets abroad. Prices for the tickets vary from 99€ (~$135) to 189€(~$260).

Just emailed out by the team for anyone who is thinking about going to Helsinki for next season's games and is interested in the official all inclusive team package.

Quote:
The Carolina Hurricanes, in conjunction with AAA, are pleased to offer special fan travel packages for the 2010 Compuware/NHL Premiere™ in Helsinki, Finland. The Hurricanes will take on the Minnesota Wild at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, on Thursday, Oct. 7 and Friday, Oct. 8. Only 50 packages have been reserved, so fans are encouraged to act quickly to take advantage of the offer!
The travel package has a total cost of $2,194 per person, plus the cost of game tickets. It includes:

•Roundtrip airfare from Raleigh-Durham to Helsinki, Finland
•Roundtrip airport to hotel transfers
•Four nights accommodations in a double-occupancy room at the Radisson Blu Plaza in Helsinki
•Transportation to see the Carolina Hurricanes team practices
•Exclusive VIP lunch with the team
•Roundtrip transportation to both games from hotel to Hartwall Arena
•Half-day sightseeing tour of Helsinki
•Special NHL souvenir
•AAA escort
There is also a land-only option for fans who purchase air travel separately. The total cost is $1,052 per person, plus the cost of game tickets, and the package includes all of the above except the roundtrip airfare and the roundtrip airport transfers.
There are two price levels for the game tickets: $300 for upper-level seats for both games or $600 for lower-level club seats for both games. Please note that there is limited availability for the upper-level seating, and that tickets are non-refundable once purchased.
In order to reserve space, fans must place deposits of $500 per person plus game-ticket cost. The final total is due July 28 and is non-refundable. For reservations and additional information, please contact AAA Travel via one of the following methods:

•Phone: (919) 832-0543 Ext. 16016 – Mary Ann Ellerbe or Ext. 16012 – Cecilia Bunting
•Email: CarolinaHurricanes@mailaaa.com
•Mail: AAA Group Travel – 2301 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607
•Fax: AAA Ground Travel – (919) 832-8847

•Roundtrip airfare from Raleigh-Durham to Helsinki, Finland = jacked up cost

•Roundtrip airport to hotel transfers = blah, whatever

•Four nights accommodations in a double-occupancy room at the Radisson Blu Plaza in Helsinki = jacked up rate

•Transportation to see the Carolina Hurricanes team practices = don't care, i'd be more interested in using that time to see helsinki

•Exclusive VIP lunch with the team = eh, whatever

•Roundtrip transportation to both games from hotel to Hartwall Arena = i'm sure they have cabs

•Half-day sightseeing tour of Helsinki = lol, a 1/2 day

•Special NHL souvenir = aka a lithograph or a hat, or something cheap

•AAA escort = yay!

airfare costs = jacked up by at least $200

tickets = much higher than buying them on your own.

basically, no thanks on the official package.

This is a great move by the NHL. Plus the Finnish connection with Svoboda, Jokinen, Pitkanen, Ruutu, and others that play/have played for this team makes it all the better.

Good move, NHL!

I'm not sure I agree about the airfare price being jacked. At first glance, I see around $1000 round-trip for a one-stop. So it's competitive even if it's a one-stop. If they end up chartering a plane for a direct flight from RDU, it's a good deal.
