Can we trade for a player who has been bought out?

I was wondering.

My thinking is that the Islanders have salary committed to Yashin until the end of 2014-15.

Could we trade Horcoff for Yashin's remaining buyout (after next year it is pretty reasonable per season) and Jeff Tambellini

Maybe a staios + Horcoff for Tambelli + Yashin + 3rd.

If you take off the committed Salary they would have paid to Yashin over the term of Horcoffs contract the end result is around 3.5 Million a year which is I think almost fair value for an elite checker like Horcoff.

Can someone clarify if this would work?

Pretty sure it doesnt work that way

Just look at the sens, they are still paying off Emery's buyout even though he now plays with philly

EDIT:
Ok, now im positive you cant. Once a player has been bought out, their contract is over. The team then has a cap hit penalty. If you could trade for that cap hit penalty, it would be like trading players for money, which is not allowed by the NHL

But he's asking if you can TRADE for just the buyout payment, not the player.

Emery signed as a free agent with Philly. Two different things.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer, or if the Oilers would do it, but I like the creativity.

I believe there is another goalie who waived to the crowd in the dying seconds of the game because he was being paid...by both team's...on the ice...at the time.

Memory......fading......

Yea, that would be like trading a player for cash....which is not allowed

interesting theory. i doubt it works, seems like a loophole the NHL "should" have thought of. i will flip through the CBA and see if i can find something on it

For **** sake! Horcoff isn't going anywhere. No matter how badly you want it to happen, he isn't being traded. He isn't being sent to the minors. He isn't being bought out. Enough with the threads already. At this point it's just pathetic.

Haven't people learned anything from Penner? Last season everyone wanted Penner out. This season he's had a complete turnaround. Don't you think Horcoff could have a similar turnaround.

This doesn't make any sense. A player who is bought out has been freed of his contractual obligations. The cap hit is the penalty incurred on the club for doing so in order to prevent teams from circumventing the cap. The player can sign with any team that he wishes, this has no effect on the penalty incurred on the club buying him out. This has happened before (someone with a better memory than I can surely come up with examples).

You can only trade player rights not the buyout aspect of a contract. Burke reportedly thought of this angle and it got shot down

Penner has tailed off. It is not as complete a turnaround as you think. I'd still trade him for a more consistent player.

you could go with Raycroft, or Tucker, or Bertuzzi, or Emery, or Jay McKee, or Patrick Eaves.

But yeah you can't trade for someones Buyout payments/cap hit. Although if you really want Yashin you could just sign him.

It's my understanding that a player who has been bought out immediately becomes an unrestricted free agent, meaning that his rights are no longer retained by the team. In that case, there is no way to acquire the rights to a player has been bought out unless you sign him to a new contract - he can't be acquired in a trade because no team owns his rights.

What a stupid frickin idea. If you want to bury Horcoff. The AHL is right there. No need to take on salary that will never reach the ice.

I think the Leafs still have to pay Darcy Tucker a million/year for the next 4 or 5 years.

Penner's in his peak years. Horcoff was past them when his new contract started. Worst signing ever.

BTW, I would have been one of the few people saying "wait until we see him with a new coaching staff that doesn't make donut jokes about him". Not saying I'm always right, but my darts typically stay on target.

Or at least the ones you talk about, haha.
