Red Wings' Tomas Holmstrom iffy for Thursday, worried about Olympics

By HELENE ST. JAMES
FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER

Forward Tomas Holmstrom left Detroit Red Wings practice early today and is questionable to play Thursday, when the Wings host the San Jose Sharks. Defenseman Niklas Kronwall is definitely out, coach Mike Babcock said.

Holmstrom has been bothered by a bruised left knee suffered Saturday at Los Angeles and missed Tuesday’s 4-3 shoot-out loss at St. Louis.

“I felt pretty good to start with,” Holmstrom said. “But then I got a pain in my knee, and when I started doing drills and going hard, I got really sore and was in pain. But there is big difference from yesterday to today. And I still was out there for 40 minutes (in practice), but I didn’t go that hard. I hope I play tomorrow, but we need to see if the sharp pain is going away."

would anyone really care if homer misses the olmypics? on the other hand franzen would end up going so it's a no win situation for the wings

Franzen's back, he's healthy, the extra games could be useful to get him in game shape again. With Homer, I really wouldn't mind if he got some rest.

I don't like ANY of the Wings playing in the Olympics. These boys have played a ton of hockey. The time off would do them good.

that out of thw ay, this is the best possible scenario. Franzen can use the skating and Homer the time off. Now if only Nick, Hank and Pav would have to stay away from this tournament.

Sweden getting knocked out early wouldn't be the worst thing for the Wings. Wouldn't mind seeing Belarus put together a run, though (Go Kolosov!)

Defenseman Niklas Kronwall (knee) will not play Thursday against San Jose.

because they already know from detroit how it is to lose.

actually a good tournament from the wings could maybe re-light the fire. some guys look like they forgot why they even play the game.

No kidding.

It's sad to say, but I probably won't be rooting for Sweden to do well in the Olympics. The less hockey they play, the better it is for the Wings.

Ideal situation: Belarus and Czech Republic go all the way, the big teams go out early and come back for a nice long rest (including Babcock) and push for the playoffs. Sorry Sweden, USA, Russia, Canada, but I have no personal interest in who wins so I care more about my NHL team. Thanks!

edit: Or even Babcock wins the Olympics with Canada so he is happy, the other teams go out early and all the other franchises who have Canadian stars are hit with tired/injured players when they come back. WIN!

Don't forget Absolut!

I'm always torn on the pro athletes in the Olympics debate. I guess I want the players to participate, but only if they don't play for my home team. The most blatant case to highlight was Yzerman in 2002. He clearly should not have been in Salt Lake, skating on one leg. It all worked out in the end in that particular case, but I can fully understand why there is no commitment to take a break and allow the players to go to Sochi in 2014. It is a gray area.

I sincerely hope that Kronwall, Franzen and Homer all end up taking the break off and skipping the games. That will probably offend the Swedes, but hey, you're getting Forsberg! The truth is that this Red Wings team is in a real desperate situation to make the playoffs, and we could use those three players for the stretch run.
