GAME PREIVEW
Last 10 -- Edmonton 2-7-1; Los Angeles 9-1-0.

Season series -- This is the third of four meetings between the teams. The Kings are 2-0 against the Oilers, and most recently earned a 3-2 victory on Dec. 15 atRexall Place. Sean O'Donnell scored the game-winner with just under five minutes left in regulation.

Big story -- The only thing that could top a postseason appearance for the Kings would be to have home-ice advantage in the opening round. That still remains highly possible, as Los Angeles enters Thursday's action just four points behind the Phoenix Coyotes for the No. 4 seed. The Kings also have two games in hand.

Team Scope:

Oilers -- The nightmarish season continued for Edmonton on Wednesday night, as it suffered a 3-2 loss at Anaheim - despite scoring a pair of shorthanded goals. The Oilers haven't won on the road since a 5-3 victory at St. Louis on Dec. 11 and are 3-22-2 in their last 27 games.

"They played hard tonight and certainly deserved a better result," Edmonton coach Pat Quinn said of his group. "We had a lot of chances to score again. If we keep getting chances, maybe we'll get the confidence to start putting some in."

Kings -- Los Angeles had a nine-game winning streak snapped on Monday night when it dropped a 4-2 decision to the Ducks at the Honda Center. The win streak was a franchise record for the Kings, who haven't made the playoffs in eight years.

"It was a nice run, a very nice run," Los Angeles coach Terry Murray said. "Guys really dug in, through some very hard games, a long road trip, come from behind, a lot of playing hard for each other, a lot of perseverance through some difficult games there. To find a way to stretch the streak to nine was tremendous. We rallied in the third period, but Anaheim brought their 'A' game here today and we didn't match it."

Who's hot -- Kings forward Anze Kopitar has recorded at least one point in 13 of his last 15 games and has 10 goals in his last 15 games.

Injury report -- Oilers forward Sam Gagner (knee) will not return until after the Olympic break, while defenseman Sheldon Souray is out at least another month with a broken hand. Ryan Stone (knee) is out indefinitely. Nikolai Khabibulin (back) and Ales Hemsky (shoulder) are done for the season. … Kings forward Justin Williams is expected to miss another month with a broken ankle, while Andrei Loktionov is on injured reserve due to a dislocated shoulder.

Stat pack -- The Oilers have been held to one or fewer goals in five of their last eight games. They've scored more than twice in four of their last 27 contests.

Puck drop -- "I guess we're pretty happy with those nine wins in a row, but I know we were a little disappointed that we didn't play very well in the first two periods. We came to play in the third and we took it to them. We've just to learn from that, and learn that we have to play every period like we did in the third." -- Kings defenseman Drew Doughty after Monday's 4-2 loss at Anaheim.

KEY PLAYERS - FORWARDS
Kopitar, LA
Penner, EDM
62PTS (27 G / 35 A, +8)46PTS (23 G / 23 A, +3)
ASSETS:Has terrific hands, creativity, shiftiness, skating ability and the potential for offensive greatness. Owns the size all 30 NHL teams crave from the center position.ASSETS:Is one of the biggest physical specimens in the game, but also possesses good hockey sense. Plays his best while standing in front of the net. Can score goals in bunches.
FLAWS:Is not a physical player, despite his massive frame. Must continue to work on his play without the puck, since he's only average in the defensive zone.FLAWS:Does not display enough consistency from game to game. Gets into trouble when he stops moving his feet. Takes a few nights off. Could stand to use his size more in defensive situations.

KEY PLAYERS - DEFENSE
Doughty, LA
Visnovsky, EDM
43PTS (11 G / 32 A, +16)30PTS (9 G / 21 A, -3)
ASSETS:Plays with the poise and composure that bely his youth. Has excellent instincts in all three zones and is an outstanding passer.ASSETS:Is a solid power-play performer. Skates very well and possesses great quickness. Likes to lug the puck up ice and has excellent offensive instincts.
FLAWS:Needs to kick his physical play up a notch at the highest level, as well as work on his shot-blocking technique.FLAWS:Is well below average in terms of his size for defensemen in the NHL, so he has trouble handling big forwards at the NHL level. Can also run into injury issues.

GOALTENDING MATCH UP
Ersberg, LA
Dubnyk, EDM
7 GP (2-3-0)9 GP (0-6-1)
SV% .882 / GAA 3.21SV% .861 / 4.17
ASSETS:Displays a strong work ethic and is considered a late-blooming talent. Put up outstanding numbers in the Swedish Elitserien.ASSETS:Boasts a massive and projectable frame, so he's able to cover a lot of net when in the crease. Has loads of puck-stopping upside.
FLAWS:Is a little on the smallish side for the goaltending position at the National Hockey League level. Needs more consistency from game to game.FLAWS:Is still largely a project, since he lacks the game-to-game consistency required at the National Hockey League level.

Not liking that first line. I thought Smyth and Kopitar were the most effective combination last game against the Ducks. Why break them up?

Nice GDT

Wow ye that first line sucks, Kopi-Brown has been a problem all season, Kopi needs people who will give the puck to him to show his skills. Don't know why changes are being made for no reason, Richardson-Kopi-Simmonds produce goals although lacked defensively, that is something they can learn by playing more together, it also gave as another scoring line in Smyth-Stoll-Brown and a third scoring line in Fro-Zeus-Parse. Changes for the sake of changes suck

Will Scuderi net the game winner tonight? Which Brown will show up? Who the heck is Dubnyk? How good will we be making him look tonight? So many questions!

We King fans are lucky to get such phenominal GDTs. Very nicely done.

I agree that the 1st line looks questionable, but I really like that thought of that second line.

I'll be in section 217 row 3.

I am a little pumped to see what Clune can bring to the table.

Avery (light) maybe?

Getting there early for the bobbleheads and I'm going to try to upgrade my seats with the season ticket updgrade coupon since I am never there early enough to attempt an upgrade.

I don't think I've seen the warm-ups since London.

The Oilers are due for a win and the Kings can't afford to take them lightly. I hope TM has done his job preparing the boys for this.

He can't score at the AHL level and people say he is not even a good fighter so why all the excitement?

Just like Jeff Giuliano, John Zeiler and Brandon Segal? Well see how much of an agitator the guy is...have any of you actually seen him play? I'm just curious.

I bought into all the excitement that there would be a trade today...silly me.

http://dropyourgloves.com/Fights/Fig...x?Player=10609

Check out his record per dropyourgloves.com and you'll notice he gives up an average of 1 inch and 11 pounds per fight this year, dropped a guy 2 inches and 20 pounds heavier than him and he is trending up in his win percentage at 56%.

He has also given up more than 30 pounds in fights at least 6 times. He is a warrior and will get in on the forecheck just as much as Segal if not more. Basically, he will provide the same amount of offense as Segal but plays with much more of an edge.

I don't get the tears for Segal. I can't even believe he was called up this year so he should be grateful to the Kings for playing him so much. Now he's got a chance with another team and could be a nice story like Ellis in Buffalo. He was a FA so no big loss...time to see what Clune can bring so we can finally reap the rewards of that 2004 1st round pick

As for your list of scrubs:

Giuliano: Nice guy but try to remember one shift of his outside of getting creamed by Joe Thornton or his hit from behind on Wiz when he was with Chicago.
Zeiler: Had the hitting part but not the balls part. Mostly an embarassment and not the warrior DL wants to create energy.
Segal: Nice guy. Scored a lucky goal. Skates up and down the ice occasionaly taking the bad penalty and making the odd hit. Horrible fighter who has lost every fight this year in both leagues. Career record in fights that have footage: 0-6-2.

Segal is 25 and Clune is 22. Clune has more upside and provides more in a certain area than Segal does at this point. I'm sure Lombardi didn't want to lose him but I don't think anyone is crying.
