Brodeur gives up a late goal? STOP THE PRESSES

The Carolina Hurricanes are pleased to announce that they have come to a contract agreement with Swiss defenseman Patrick von Gunten. "We may have been a bit hasty in our decision to go towards a more physical defense this past offseason. But one thing that will never get old is scoring on Martin Brodeur late in games." Rutherford stated "We feel that having Patrick, Staal and Jokinen on the ice late in any game against Marty gives us the psychological edge we need".

Plain and simple, Canada needs to wake the **** up and play their game.

Credit to the Swiss though. They're playing a solid hockey game.

It's the same style the Swiss used in Torino to stifle Canada. I think Canada gets one here though, they seem to be far more focused then they were early in the game.

No need for a Swiss defenceman, at this point pucks are deflecting of Canadas skates and into the net.The Swiss hockey gods have our number.

Apparently Hitchcock came out of the room pissed and didn't speak to any media. Let's see if they ripped into the boys. There's gotta be more intensity and drive from this group.

Swiss need to win this in OT. I don't think they have any chance in a shootout.

With the way this Canadian team is playing, I wouldn't count the Swiss out in a shootout at this point.

Well...unfortunately I was right. That was seriously a sad shootout by the Swiss. The 2nd chance was the only one that had a chance and it rolled off his stick.

Canada is very beatable though.

Crosby: "They didn't generate much after the 2nd goal"

What game was he watching? The Swiss had many opportunities to win it but Brodeur came up big.

A critical point dropped by Canada. Current standings, although they don't mean too much yet:

1. United States (2 GP)
2. Russia (1 GP)
3. Finland (1 GP)
4. Canada (2 GP)
--------------------
5. Czech Republic (1 GP)
6. Sweden (1 GP)
7. Switzerland (2 GP)
8. Slovakia (1 GP)
9. Germany (1 GP)
10. Belarus (1 GP)
11. Latvia (1 GP)
12. Norway (2 GP)

(top 4 get bye into quarterfinals)

I can only hope this game serves as some sort of a wakeup call for Canada to really zone in and play the kind of game these guys are capeable of playing. Luckily enough we got the win, but I almost feel like we lost that game it was so close and uneasy to watch. This is a short tournament, time to gel and execute, quickly.

Not to mention it seemed as though Crosby thought they played a pretty good game. We had some opporunities, but I personally didn't like their game at all.

Sunday should be fun... Or maybe not so much if they bring much of the same.

Ugh, what a terrible way to end the game. The shootout is bad enough, but repeating shooters? Come on.

I'm really disappointed in Staal thus far. He's been completely lackluster with the exception for a few plays. I don't know if it's because of the lack of ice time or just being surrounded by talent for once, but he's done nothing but float for a good portion of the tourney.

The one time he actually made an effort in the games was in this past OT period, which is typical Staal, to only show up when the pressure's on.

I thought he was fine against Norway..drawing penalties, going to the net, etc......but he was pretty lackluster tonight. His whole line looked pretty "meh" tonight.

After watching the Swiss national team, I am in awe of their brand of physical hockey. So if we slip in draft position and still somehow manage to land Nino Neiderreiter in the draft, I would be a huge fan of the move. I know he doesn't really have much to do with the Olympic team but I think the Swiss team and their program could be on the rise and he already has NA hockey experience.

Agreed. Staal was solid vs. Norway iin my opinion. Tonight, like you said, lackluster, as was most of the team in my opinion. It just wasn't there for whatever reason. As for the line itself, I expected more as a whole. Getzlaf hasn't been the impact forward I expected/thought we'd see, although I really have a hard time believing Getzlaf is healthy. I haven't been impressed with Perry, hasn't done much for me. I wasn't sold on him being named to the team, still feel the same way. I think his great start to the season got him here.

All in all the games only get bigger as we go. We'll see who steps up.

Staal was terrible last night along with the majority of the team. Babcock actually benched Iginla in the third. This had better serve as a wakeup call. I hope Staal gets things going because his play thus far is pretty embarassing. Only time I really noticed him against Switzerland was when he was turning over the puck.

Canada needs to break up that Staal line... I don't think Getz is doing much of anything create shots.. I'd like to see Crosby, Stall, and Nash... And no, not the 70's group

Darren Pang believes Staal should be on Crosby's wing with Iginla on the other side. Not sure what Kypreos and McKenzie think, I only caught a piece of it.

Ruutu scores for Finland. Tap in after it squeezes past the German goalie.

Hey folks! I also posted this in the FIN/GER game thread, so for those of you reading both this is a repeat.

I am in need of a small favor. On the Canadian broadcast, sometime after Ruutus penalty (13:44 first pd), the announcers mentioned an issue with the nameplate on his jersey being sewn wrong. It wasnt on the US broadcast, and the issue must have been caught during warmups and fixed before faceoff because in looking at his jersey on the US/NBC broadcast it was correct at faceoff.

Anyhow, Id love a screen capture of the picture of the wrong jersey plate if anyone can snag it off the Canadian broadcast. Im here in the US and don't have access to the CTV replays.

If someone can snag it Id really appreciate it. You dont have to do anything fancy, just get the video to run as large as you can on your screen, pause it, printscreen, save the picture as a JPG file and send it to me in a Private Message, I can take it from there.

THANKS IN ADVANCE
