Rostraver Ice Garden Roof Collapses

It should be in the news shortly, but apparently the Ice Garden's roof collapsed and quite a few ambulances have been dispatched. Scary to think I played quite a few hockey games there. I hope everyone that was there turns out to be okay.

Just made NBC top news during the Olympics. Still people unaccounted for, really scary.

i heard everyone is ok. i played a ton of games there very scary thought to think that the building was that unstable. there were a few younger players in the locker room thank god they weren't on the ice. id say overall the place didnt seem as if it was ready to go id bet where the roof trusses were connected to the ground is where it began to give way. i dont think they will ever reopen thats for sure.. on a lighter note, murphs pub looks intact.

I heard Bob Grove talking about this during the post-game show and according to him, it may be the oldest Western PA arena.
Hope nobody is seriously injured.

Not surprising. I played there in high school. Always dreaded that trip. Coldest rink too. I never wore socks with my skates, but I had to in that place.

Let's just hope everyone is alright.

Jeez, that's way worse that I was expecting. A third of the freaking roof.

Didn't know it was that serious.

Reminds me of that rink in Germany that collapsed a few years (or decades?) back. I think a bunch of people died in that one.

There's a team of kids from Ajax (near Toronto) that's in the tournament.
Everyone from that team has been accounted for according to the news here. I hope everyone is okay.

Only a few years back, in 2005 or 2006, and more or less a dozen people died.
I know it was in Bavaria, but can't remember the city..

Gotta figure the weight of the snow played an impact in this. I played there a few times in high school whenever we went to play Serra Catholic. Definitely the coldest rink around the Burgh. The rnk had some character to it which was neat. Hope everyone is accounted for and safe.

I only live about 10 minutes from the rink now and have played there several times throughout high school and college. Weird thing is me and my buddy were just talking about rinks we hated playing in last night and Rostraver was up there. Scary situation and I hope everyone is okay but as others said, I'm not overly surprised.

I hope they just let the old barn die. It's a lousy rink. Knock it down and start a new arena from scratch, since a lot of teams depend on it in both the PAHL (amateur) and PIHL (scholastic).

I will now have had two games canceled out of that rink this year.

I never played hockey there, but I did see a few good shows there in the past.

A few days ago I was thinking about the time I saw Ted Leo there. It was a decent place for bigger concerts as far as Pittsburgh goes. The sound was awful, as you'd expect in a rink, but at least it was wide open, you could see from anywhere, and nice and cool!

That was in Bad Reichenhall four years ago. The constant moisture and pressure from all the snow dissolved the glue that held the wooden beams together and the entire roof came down. There was some public skating going on at the time and 15 people were killed, 12 of them were children. Happened only minutes before the rink was going to be closed early because of safety concerns...

Just awful. Hopefully there are no major injuries at this one.
