Olympic Hockey Thread

The mens olympic hockey tournament will start today with tilts fewaturing Canada, USA, and Russia (and some weak opponents for each). Here is an overview of the round robin schedule. Remember that almost every game can also be seen online by canadians at www.ctvolympics.ca

There will be no individual GDTs for these games on individual team boards. Please also try to keep discussion of sens players performance in this thread. Individual GDTs will be posted on the international tournaments board (renamed Olympic Hockey at the moment) and will be linked to from the first post here.

was that not clear?

we cant have individual GDTs clogging up every single team board. There will be GDTs on the international tournaments board and a general thread (this one) here.

The Russian squad looks quiiiiite scary with their line combos from practice.

Ovechkin - Datsyuk - Semin
Kovalchuk - Malkin - Afinogenov
Radulov - Federov - Kozlov
KHL? - KHL? - KHL?

Gonchar - Tyutin

Fighting over GDT's should be a Special Olympics sport.

It's really too bad they decided to make it a 12-team tournament instead of 10 or preferably 8. We could be watching amazing teams against each other in the round robin - instead we're watching Canada-Norway and USA-Switzerland... yawn.

I was thinking the same thing.

2 pools like this would be stellar:

Canada
USA
Czech Republic
Slovakia

Russia
Sweden
Finland
One of the rest

Anything can happen in one game, even huge upsets, but odds are USA and Canada will be 2-0 with huge differentials going into Sunday's game.

I disagree. Having 12 teams doesnt change the quality of play in the medal round, and we still have at least 2 very good teams in each group. It also increases the opportunity for upsets.

EG, if we had an 8-team tournament, Slovakia would probably be in a division with something like CZE, RUS, and SWE/FIN. Even if Slovakia can pull an upset against one of those powers, they cant make the medal round without upsetting at least 2.

Under the current system, if they can pull a win off against russia, they have a good chance to make the medal round, where anything can happen.

Canada and the US only get one competitive game (against each other) before they have to play an elimination game - it's ridiculous.

Edit: yes, I know Switzerland isn't that bad, and can even pull off the upset, but they can't be considered adequate preparation for the likes of Russia, Sweden, Czechs, etc.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. My understanding is that in the current 12-team system everybody moves on, with the top four teams getting byes and 5v12 6v11 7v10 8v9. So Slovakia, even if they lose to Russia and the Czechs, would still be a favorite in their first elimination game against the likes of Germany or Switzerland.

The ideal system, IMO, would have eight or ten teams in two groups, with no byes and straight quarterfinals.

what i'm trying to say is that if a slovakia beats russia or cze, they have a chance at one of those 4 byes.
