Re-signing theory

I'm thinking that as soon as Gauthier was named as GM he wanted to make a significant impact, the first and easiest of which (theoretically) would have been to re-sign Plekanec and possibly one or both goalies. He probably contacted Plek's agent and told him he was ready for some serious negotiating, and his agent told Gauthier he wasn't going to put anything on paper until the Olympics were said and done. Now look at both Plekanec and Halak, playing so well for their respective teams, showing the whole world what they're worth.

These Olympics, as exciting as they are, are potentially hurting our team... Hopefully Gauthier's willing to do what it takes to solidify our core this season, before it's too late!

Any thoughts?

Too bad Markov isn't a UFA. He'd be a bargain!

Whatever Halak will get, Price will ask too, as they both had their up and down moments, and their career stats are similar. If the Habs can get Halak on 2 mil, than we might just be OK to keep both. Price's qualifying offer is no more than 1 mil, as his true salary is 850K without bonuses.

He's not getting any ice time, the coach must hate him or something...

It doesn't surprise me that people think player value fluctuates from game to game , but it really doesn't. Plekanec and Halak have a market value that's been set by previous contracts and othr minor considerations (inflation and player comfort factors, the so-called home town discount) , if they make or stop the gold medal shot it's not going to change things.

Plekanec will be signed after Montreal is eliminated this spring, the real work for Gauthier is where he will find the money.

Halak might be qualified and a deal worked out later in July, but given that Gauthier doesn't have a lot of free agents to deal with, he may get that deal done early too.

I think we'll be pleased with both signings.

He's obviously still hurt, and shouldn't be playing.

But whatever. At least he's not playing 20 minutes...

The Olympics isn't just one or two games, it can be up to 8 which is a pretty big deal considering all of the GM's get to see these guys play. I'm not expecting anyone's value to go up by a couple million bucks, but interest is going to go up and there's a lot of teams that could offer our guys some deals that we can't offer. I'm just hoping we get the guys we want to keep locked up.

You're probably right, hopefully he comes back at full health
