Steve Ott to the Highest Bidder

To the dismay of many Stars fans, it appears that Ott will not be re-signing in Dallas, due to a tight internal budget. So they will very likely be dealing him at the trade deadline.

For those interested, he plays a great all-around game and is a significant presence during the playoffs. He played in the top-six last year when Morrow went down and had a career year, but was forced out this year because of the emergence of Jamie Benn. I have heard that, after this year, he is looking for a deal at upwards of $3M per.

What is he worth to your team for a playoff run and a potential re-signing in the off-season?

3 million is a lot for a guy who has yet to put up 20 goals.

I can understand the hesitation...

It's a tough spot for Ott and the Stars. Personally, I think he can play in the top-six and continue to improve his numbers. However, as is the case with the Stars, when you have Richards, Ribeiro, Neal, Eriksson, Benn, and Morrow, it is almost impossible to crack those top two lines.

That's why the Stars can't put up the cash for him. It has yet to be determined whether or not he will be able to get that on the open market. Personally, I think he will get it because he brings a lot of intangibles to the team as well.

I thought I read somewhere that Ott is injured and or had surgery? Wouldn't mind seeing him sign with the Leafs in the offseason at the right price.

Ott is a dirty player. I still remember the cheap shot that injured Sharp two years ago. My guess is he'll end up in Edmonton.

I think he had an appendectomy. I'm pretty sure he is slated to return to the lineup when the season resumes.

Ott is this year's Manny Malhotra if he thinks he's getting $3m without a substantial rise in the cap. He'll end up signing a cheap short term deal with a good deal looking for depth in September.

That was not a dirty play! He threw a clean check and Sharp was the one in the wrong position!

Imagine Ott signing with the Habs. Those Montreal-Boston games would be a dandy.

I think he should be a top priority, but with the Stars self-imposde cap (46ish?) how can they afford everybody.

Neal, Grossman, Niskanen are all RFA's and need raises. And Lehtonen is also an RFA but i cant see him making too much more than his current contract

I sure as hell hope not, with James Neal a pending RFA.

Plenty of other Stars RFA's to focus on before dealing wth Ott; frankly, I'm hoping Joe doesn't offer him anywhere near the $3 mil he's supposedly asking for.

I'd say a smidge over 2 million is fair for Ott, 3 or 4 years.

I don't want to pay Ott over 2.5 million but someone will. I understand the Stars don't want to tie up that kind of money in a guy who won't be in the Dallas top six but I also understand Steve's view and the fact that this will probably be the best contract he ever signs. I wish him well if he goes and hope Niewendyk trades him if they can't reach a deal.

If they do decide to trade him I think there will be a big market.

Noone is going to pay 3 Mil for Ott.

If someone does, he should be fired immediately from the position before the deal goes through the NHL.

Burrows took a sweetheart deal, lets not pretend that that sets the market value for those types.

Or...you could send the Kings James Neal...then you would have room to resign Ott...
