I've always looked at McGuire as a smarter, talented, and more knowledgeable version of Mike Milbury. He and Ferraro are great between the benches unlike a guy like Healy. I think what you are hearing is too much excitement in Pierre. The guy gets his heart rate going and there may be a tiny speech impediment or something.

IMHO: he's going to get a good GM opportunity somewhere within 3 years. I am thinking he'll get his choice of Calgary, Montreal, NYR, St. Louis, or Tampa Bay - Although I think they might go back to Feester over Pierre.

On one hand, McGuire says some pretty cheesy stuff.

But I have to admit, I actually like him. No matter if he's got cheesy lines or not, his hockey knowledge is spot on and he knows how to analyse a game so that both seasoned hockey fans and less informed watchers can appreciate what goes on.

But on the topic of emulating accents when announcing players' names, you must look no further than Joe Bowen announcing a Leafs game when Mikhail Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrbovsky is on the ice.

Also, the best thing about Pierre is that he is really, genuinely excited about the game and its intricacies, even though they may be obvious to informed hockey followers. As a result, I find his analysis gets me even more excited about the game I'm watching. That's the type of person you want on your network, imo.

Even the Vancouver public address announcer is calling these players by their original pronunciation (he sounded a little like Ahhnold). During the NHL season we seem to minimalize their names, but as this is an international event, it's more respectful to at least try to use proper names.

Pierre does this out of respect - a little too much? Maybe, but he is Pierre and does tend to over emphasize things. He knows his stuff though.

I think people overrate what he actually knows. Of course he understands the game, but hes not some genius.

Hes passionate, he is good on TV, and hes dedicated to knowing all of the players.

Hes a massive fan of hockey and it translates well to TV for many people. His comments are douchy, but for some reason I like his commentary. Weird.

His job, plain and simple: Make household names out of the players. Theres a reason his popularity has risen since the lockout. Theres a reason hes the one on NBC all the time. They want people to know who the players are, he goes too far some times, but he does his job fairly well. At least they make fun of him on air when he goes to far.

Say what you want about Pierre, but he's at the games where we'd all love to be, and he's earning at least a couple of paycheques while being there. Not too shabby...

Pierre hasn't been so bad during the Olympics, to be fair. At least he always knows exactly what's going on.

McGuire - Woah, they just got away with too many men there! Teams have to be careful about that!

That's one of the main components of the famous drinking game.

He was born in NJ, so what? Does Heatley cheer for Canada or Germany?

All I know about McGuire is that he has a penchant for colourful phrases and coming up with nicknames like "The Human Eraser" for Marc Staal which he then started using to describe Luke Schenn.

He also has no respect for personal space, evidence being how close he stands to Dutchysen every chance he gets. A little creepy.. that is all.
