Problem with goalies is goalies have a tendency to play great one season and horrible the next. When a lot of pressure is put on a goalie to play average to good every goalie is a gamble.

Montreal is gonna hold on to both Halak and Price untill the offseason unless someone throws something big in the face of the Habs at the deadline. I'm not sure which team would be willing to do that right now

And for those who are unaware of the rules to signing an RFA

these numbers are approximations:

OFFER Compensation

$660,000 or below None

Over $660,000 to $1 million Third round pick

Over $1.0 million to $2.0 million Second round pick

Over $2.0 million to $3.0 million 1st and 3rd round pick

Over $3.0 million to $4.0 million 1st, 2nd and 3rd

Over $4.0 million to $5.0 million (2)1st, 2nd, and 3rd

Over $5 million (4)1st round picks

On another note, if Slovakia somehow manages to win Gold Halak's value will skyrocket into oblivion and teams will have to offer a **** load for this goaltender.
So Pierre Gauthier can play a a$$hole game... he just need to match the offer from others teams to 3 millions or more or like he want... Thanks a lot!

St. Louis - Absolutely, they need to get over the hump, Halak can be a key. Chris Mason is 33, for the record.
Nashville - Nope, they just kept Rinne.

Calgary - Yes, Kipper is floundering and his heart is in question more and more every season. Moderate to high interest.
Colorado - Probably not, but they like getting goalies from the habs...
Vancouver - Nope, Louuuuuuuu is good.
Edmonton - Very interested but don't have many assets.
Minnesota - Backstrom is 32, they must be moderately interest in Halak.

SJ - Nabokov is old and a huge choker, if they mess up in the POs once again, SJ will be at the top of the list for his services.
Phoenix - Moderate interest.
LA - Absolutely, if Dean Lombardi thinks this year is their year.
Dallas - Lehtonen sucks and is a band-aid. They'll make a run for Halak in the off-season for sure.
Anaheim - Nope, Hiller is good enough.
It doesn't seem like you watch a whole lot of the Western Conference.

Your numbers are old, this is what they were for this year and can change for this summer. $3 million will only get a second round pick.

2009 RFA Compensation
$994,433 or below – No compensation
Over $994,433 to $1,506,717 – 3rd round pick
Over $1,506,717 to $3,013,433 – 2nd round pick
Over $3,013,433 to $4,520,150 – 1st round pick and 3rd round pick
Over $4,520,150 to $6,026,867 – 1st round pick, 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick
Over $6,026,867 to $7,533,584 – Two 1st round picks, 2nd round pick and 3rd round pick
Over $7,533,584 – Four 1st round picks

I think the other poster was pointing to the fact that someone said Mason is unproven, so Halak is more proven then him? Either way neither is more proven(both limited playoff experience) and yes Halak has been much better this season. It's easier to say ____ is better then ____ at the moment. AT THE MOMENT Tukka Rask is better then Tim Thomas

The market for goalies is probably at an all time LOW. How many teams need one? Maybe 2? Then it's just a matter of those 2 now creating a bidding war.

Let's not forget Huet got a 2nd rounder not so long ago. Even though he's younger, I don't see Huet getting more than a 2nd + mid prospect, or some 2nd line type guy with tremendous upside.

Draft position do not matter anymore, Halak is not a rookie. Following your point of view I guess Markov would play on the Bulldogs since he was drafted so far.

It is not the first time we see Halak being hot, every season it happened. 3 years ago he was doing well when Huet was injured, last season he helped a lot getting Habs into playoffs. This season Halak was great most of the time, and it continue at the Olympics.

I guess only a Stanley cup or a gold medal will convince people (even then...) that Halak is a top 10 NHL goalie. The guy is steadily progressing and he do not go back in his development, I am confident he will be even better next season.

Well they would certainly be a good fit for Halak, but unlike other posters on here i would not be prepared to deal Halak for Pekham and your early 2nd rounder.

I'd want more.

I don't generally subscribe to the idea that Olympic performance is going to carry over to player value in the NHL, but Halak might be the one guy whose stock has shot upwards due to Olympic play — so much so that his value might be at the untouchable level. His national team breakout may finally be the impetus that the Canadiens need to deal Price instead, and hope that they haven't made a colossal blunder, trading the guy with pedigree only to retain a guy who may simply be hot temporarily.

Trust me i share that view (fear for me).

I think the best thing Gauthier can do right now is keep both guys and re-evaluate in the offseason. Everybody talks about the potential cap issues, and while the Habs do have some...there are definitely options out there that will help them get out of this little bind.

Short of a team absolutely flooring the Habs with an offer they can't refuse, i can't see Price or Halak going anywhere. The Habs simply need Halak if they want any chance to make the playoffs...and trading Price is just far too risky for my blood.
