Who is going to actually own the podium when it's all done? Is it going to a sports hall of fame museum in Vancouver or something?

The goal of "Own The Podium" was to lead the total medal count. They admitted failure the other day, can't catch USA. Its possible to still win golds, but the medal counts are irrelevant anyway.

I think OTP set the bar just a little too high.

Thats pretty sad if true, but a pretty smart marketing ploy. They could take it from store to store for some nice advertising.

There is no pride in finishing 2nd IMO...

That's why there is only 1 Champion in sports, you don't see Marian Hossa walking around bragging about finishing on a 2nd place team 2 years in a row.

There is also no "official" winner at the olympics according to the IOC, but the general consensus around the world and media around the world is the ranking is done by gold medals...

OTP lost all Gov support and has to rely on corporate support once these games are done

I saw some program on how Rona "built" them and will be using them for marketing purposes.

It'd be nice to have that, but Hockey gold will top that anyday.

We have a chance for Gold at:
Men's Hockey
Men's Curling (Martin won, right?..Last I checked it was 6-2)
Women's Curling
Ladies' Relay Long Track Speed Skating

Other medals:
Figure Skating (Ladies) C'mon Joannie...
Men's Relay LT

I'm probably missing something else.

EDIT: Really disappointed with Alpine Skiing. NO MEDALS.....yet all I heard from Manuel Osborne Paradis was that he knows the hill 10x more than anyone, and then finishes 17th. You think President's Choice feels like they picked a wrong team?

Who cares, we'll all forget about medal counts the second the Olympics are over and the trade deadline is rolling around.

Commie!

I kind of agree. It doesn't really matter who ends up with the most medals anyway. Population differences are going to skew how people judge the results.

When you think about it, Norway has what...5 million people...and look what they are accomplishing. That is probably the most amazing achievement.

Why do you guys care so much about "winning" the Olympics by any measure? Like, do you think the rest of the world is sitting around impressed?

Without looking it up, do you know who "won" the 2002 Games? Who "won" the 1980 Summer Games? Do you care? Does anyone?

If Canada "won" the Olympics, I'd forget about it by March 2. If the USA "won"... I'd still forget about it by March 2.

Vancouver is the biggest loser because they will be in severe debt because of the games.

The USA didn't even compete in the 1980 Summer Games.

In Olympic history (Winter+Summer), the US has the most gold medals(1007, next highest USSR with 473) and the most total medals(2511, next highest USSR with 1204). I highly doubt the US uses total medals to make themselves "look better". They picked a convention and stuck with it. It doesn't make any sense to use only gold medals for ranking. If you do that you might as well not hand out any other medals then.

It think it was more because NBC didn't want to praise cheating.
