They should have a points system:

5 points for gold
3 points for silver
1 point for bronze

How many people actually care how many bronze medals a country racks up in ski cross or nordic combined? Gold baby, gold. Particularly in men's hockey.
I dunno, people who care about sports other than hockey? Shocker, I know.

Someone should tell the girl from Canada who just won a "Bronze" medal, four days after her mother died of a heart attack that the posters on HFBoards thinks her medal is worthless. You know, since it is a bronze.

Seriously.

Then again, most of the people in this thread only watch hockey, so what can you expect? Oddly enough, there are other athletes who train just as much (in most cases, more) just to get to the Olympics.

Yep.

It really pisses me off when people act like Silver and Bronze are worth nothing or are for losers. Winning either of those is an incredible accomplishment.

I think alot of our 4th and 5th place finishes hold a lot of weight as well and are good signs we are right there with the US and Germany.... along with winning 8 Golds

The IOC has always had medal count by most golds. North American media outlets choose to do it by total medals to make their countries look better.

Agreed. We're all hockey fans but will any medal in the olympics in any sport is a huge accomplishment.
I kind of feel sorry for people who are too narrow-minded to realize that.

A gold is certainly worth mroe to me.

I would do a simple system of:

Gold - 4 points
Silver - 2 points
Bronze - 1 point

Anyone would take a single gold over a silver and a bronze.

With that being said, I dont really care. Its all about mens hockey. Gold or the olympics are a failure. Sucks, but thats the reality in Canada.

Who is "they"?

The United States and Canada are the only countries who organize their medal tables by overall medals. Every other country (and the IOC themselves) display the medal tables with most golds at the top, regardless of the total medal counts.

This. If there were medals for 4th and 5th, Canada would be right at the top for total medals.

This is ridiculous. Every single day we declare multiple winners in the Olympics.

Where does the IOC display the medal count?

Like someone said earlier, nobody wins the Olympics. That's not what the event is about. So celebrating your country winning the most medals or most golds is just a shameful display of out of control nationalism.

They don't, and the IOC has no view on which is the correct way to have a medal table.
