First game in less than 24 hours so ..... let the trades begin. No time for sympathy wrt the Olympics. If there are trades on the way, they should be announced tomorrow. The remainder of the deadline is really short and the GMs have had plenty of time to sort things out the past couple weeks.

If you are the team making the acquisition it seems to me, the earlier the better. I know there is a lot of bargaining, but I'd want to acquire my new player in such a way that I maximize the amount of time he has to get comfortable and build chemistry. I understand why the big guys go down to the wire (lots of one-upping), but I am always surprised when a goon is traded at the deadline. You mean to tell me that you just found the perfect goon?

-Washington will acquire one of Seidenberg, Hambius, Leopold, or another top 4 d-man.
-Phoenix will acquire a borderline top 6 forward, who will work out perfectly.
-Detroit will acquire a borderline top 6 forward
-Nashville or Pittsburgh will acquire Ponikarovsky
-Calgary will do something random
-Montreal will acquire a top 4 d-man
-San Jose will acquire a solid 4th line RW or center. I vote Richard Park.
-Florida will ship out Campbell, Leopold, and Seidenberg
-Philadelphia will acquire Owen Nolan (Sharks fans will cry)
-Someone will acquire Ray Whitney for 2nd+solid prospect
-Vancouver will acquire a top 4 d-man (Mitchell possibly out for season)
-Dallas will move a top 6 or Brunnstrom for defensive help
-Dallas will trade Ott for a 2nd. I hope to God he goes out of conference

Potential blockbuster:
Niklas Backstrom
Thomas Vokoun

I was one that thought the sharks would sit tight on the deadline. But hearing that the injury to pickles is much worse then everyone thought, makes me think DW will pull the trigger here. The D is already spotty enough. But will DW grab a top 4 D player for a huge cost, or grab another forward?

This team is going to look a whole lot different next season either way.
this should be an interesting 2-3 days

Word out of Dallas is that Ott has signed 4-year extension (or at least agreed to terms; announcement expected this morning).

Also Panthers trade Leopold to Penguins (pending trade call)

From other thread, looks like Sharks recalled McGinn, Helminen, and Demers.

I can understand one Forward (to give them 12 on roster) and one Defenseman (for Vlasic). Interesting that they brought up another Forward. Either Malholtra isn't healthy, they expect one of the Olympic forwards to need a game off, or there is a trade coming... :-)

They had six healthy defensemen, excluding Vlasic.

Pre-practice update. States that Shelley trade was to clear cap space for call ups.

Tampa puts Brandon Bochenski on re-entry waivers. Philadelphia puts Riley Cote on waivers.

I still think DW is going to look for a backup to Nabby. Greiss has been OK, but its hard for me to believe with such an important position and with our defensive weakness, that he isn't going to find a cheap veteran to sign for depth.

As per Eklund..... Sutton is another possibility for Vancouver, but Calgary and San Jose are interested in Sutton as well. Still hearing the Isles are trying to make a major move.

Possible that Sutton and Park are heading to Sharks....Isles looking for an even bigger deal.

And then what do you do with Greiss? I really dont see a trade happening concerning a Goalie unless its Nabs replacement coming this way.

If he had interest in a cheap veteran, he would have kept Boucher.

The depth is perfectly fine. If Nabokov doesn't cut it, the team is screwed anyway. There isn't a single team with a clear cut no.1 goalie which could win the Stanley Cup if the goalie falters or gets injured. The few teams that wouldn't be bothered by it, don't have a clear cut starter to begin with.

Found this on a site that bashes Eklund. Its from 2009, but I thought the numbers, though not suprising, are interesting.

Incorrect Rumors from Jan 1, 2008 - May 31, 2009: 457

Greiss wouldn't be a NHL backup unless the Sharks had confidence in him. Unless Nabber is hurt -or- they move Nabber out i don't think there will be any goalie deals until the off season.

All indicators are Vlasic will be back for the playoffs so we don't need Sutton again (he broke in with the Sharks!). Park as a depth forward would be good!

Love the Canes board, they are great. Kind of nutty like the sharks board, but a lot of fun too!

Kelley speculates on needs leading up to deadline.

Thinks the Sharks could more one or more UFAs. But that list includes some of the hardest workers and most dependable players in teal. I think it highly unlikely.

Apparently, Murray can't resign Volchenkov (wants too much). Would you want him as a rental? He probably wants around 5mil, so IMO that's too much to resign him in summer.
