Where does Handzus fit in here? Right now it looks like we're trading Drury, Dubi, Girardi and a 1st for Greene, which i would definitely advise against. We need our first picks desperately. Also, where is Weise?

I don't know why I called up Weise. But 2011 is weak draft anyway and come on. IMO that's a damn good looking team. We shed Drury's contract in the deal adn get cap space.

Apart from Kovalchuk and Gaborik, that forward lineup doesn't look very good. And we'd be even worse at center than we are right now.

I didnt know Gilroy had a brother.

Also I really doubt Grachev is up with the big club next season.

I meant Roszival. I think he will be. That's just what I would do.

Maybe I can't read, but NOBODY has addressed the only problem in having size and strength and NET awareness for King protection...

We have scorers, and if Boyle or Anisimov ever grew a pair, they would already have someone to screen the goalie too.

2) Anisimov, Gilroy, Rozsival, 2nd for B. Richards, 4th (His cap hit is ridiculous (7.8) but it's only for another year and then we'd get first dibs to try to re-sign him to a more reasonable cap-friendly deal)

3) Re-sign Prospal 2 years 2.25 mil

4) Sign Volchenkov (5 years, 5 mil)

5) Wishful thinking: Grachev and Stepan make the team (Why it isn't far-fetched: although Grachev hasn't been OVERLY impressive in Hartford, he did almost make the Rangers out of camp this year so a full year of the pro-game should only increase his chances next year. Stepan had a brilliant WJC and I've heard from a number of sources who feel he may be ready for the pro-level next season; whether its in the AHL or NHL is yet to be seen)

Prospal Richards Gaborik
Grachev Dubinsky Callahan
Drury Stepan Avery
Prust Boyle Shelley

Staal Volchenkov
DelZotto Girardi
Sanguinetti UFA (Jurcina, Wallin, or a #6 veteran 1year deal)

Lundqvist
Auld / Johnson / league-minimum backup
I believe Stepan has come out and said he wants to go back to school next year, so he would not even be in camp.

You have some pretty good ideas there, but the problem I see is

1) Drury will not waive his NTC to go to LA
2) I don't think LA would bite on that package, sure they get Dubinsky in case Frolov leaves, but then they're stuck with Drury, and I don't think they'd be interested in having him.

Ok, bare with me. I got a little... no... VERY carried away.. it starts off with a BLOCKBUSTER:

Anisimov, Girardi, Sanguinetti, 1st for Ryan Suter
Rozsival, Mcdonagh for Mueller, K. Sauer
Waive Redden to hell... I mean Hartford.
Sign Volchenkov (5 yrs @ 5 mil)
Re-sign Prospal (2yrs @ 3 mil) (that's a 150% raise)
Re-sign Christensen (1 yr @ 850k)
Re-sign Staal(4 yrs @ 3 mil)

2010-2011

Prospal Christensen Gaborik
Dubinsky Mueller Callahan
Grachev Drury Avery
Prust Boyle Shelley

Staal Volchenkov
DelZotto Suter
Gilroy K. Sauer

2011-2012

re-sign Dubinsky(can't know the #'s yet)

Prospal Stepan Gaborik
Dubinsky Mueller Callahan
Grachev Drury Avery
Prust Boyle Shelley or equivalent 4th-line (least of our worries)

Staal Volchenkov
DelZotto Suter
Gilroy K. Sauer

We can ship Gilroy(UFA), Prospal(UFA), Avery(UFA), Drury(finally UFA)(if he waives NMC) for picks or players at the deadline depending on the circumstances

2012-2013: THE CONTENDERS.

Re-sign Suter, Cally, etc
Sign Patrick Sharp

Dubinsky Sharp Gaborik
Grachev Mueller Callahan
Kreider Stepan Werek
Bourque Boyle Prust / Byers / Weise / etc, 4th line

Staal Volchenkov
DelZotto Suter
M. Sauer K. Sauer <-- hehe

No need to flame. I'm fully aware of how unrealistic this all is and even if I tried to be realistic about it, you can't look that far into the future without knowing cap implications and development curves, etc, but I was bored and I must admit I'm getting kind of turned on just looking at that blueline.

ok heres me playing gm..not sure about salaries bc im at work right now and cant look but

Resign prospal for 2mil for another year
Resign Joke for 3.5mil for 2 years
Resign Christ for 850k per 2yrs
Sign Volchenkov 5mil 4yrs
bury redden in the minors!
Trade Rosie and Girardi for high draft picks
Sign Hamhuis/Corvo/Seidenberg for 3mil for 2-3 years
Call up Sanguenetti

so we have basically 11mil in signings there, with 13mill off the books with rosie, girardi and redden gone. call up sangs left with 1.2million

Let the rest of the free agents walk...

Prospal EC Gabby
Dubi Joke Cally
Drury Ani Avery
Prust Boyle Lisin/Byers

Staal Volchenkov
MDZ Hamhuis/Corvo/Seid
Gilroy Sangs

Not a big lineup change but you gain two crease clearers and solid shutdown dmen in volchenkov and one of Hamhuis/Seid. Staal and Volchenkov amazing shutdown d pairing.. Then mdz and the free agent signing would make a very solid 2nd pairing and our 3rd we give sangs a shot and allow gilroy to continue. Finally have two very good vet dmen that our young guns can learn from.

Offensively yea i know i didnt address that problem but i found defense to be our most glaring hole and you cant win without defending. in 10-11 cally, duby, and ani will continue to prosper, after 2011, drury is gone and anothe 7mil off the books along with prospals 2 mil.. give us 9million to play with in the upcomming years.

you have to build from the goalie out and defense is next.

Dubinsky is bigger, cheaper and 3 years younger than Weiss. Dubinsky has 3 times the number of hits per game and has a much better +/-. And Dubinsky's offensive totals are on par with Weiss's at the same age.

The only advantage that Weiss has is that right now, at the age of 26, he scores .18 more points per game and he's shown to be a bit more of a goal scorer than Dubinsky. But again, if you look at the numbers from when Weiss was 23, he had 20 goals in 74 games. Dubinsky has 13 in 49 games. That's a pace of 19-20 goals in 74 games.

So offensively, Dubinsky is exactly where Weiss was at the same age. And Dubinsky is by far the more physical player. So why should we trade Dubinsky, Rozsival and Sauer for Weiss? Makes no sense. You'd pay an extra 1.25 mil per year in cap space for .18 points per game? Over an 82 game season that's about 15 points.

On top of all that, these deals involve trading 5 roster players and only getting back 1. Who do we put in the other 4 spots? Should we gut Hartford and stunt player development so that we can finish out the year?
Excellent post GAG. Glad you took the time here to break down the numbers. I am definatel on the same side of the fence here. Trading Dubi for Weiss is NOT the answer. Especially when more had to be added to the equation to supposedly bring Weiss here. I said it before and I would say it again, 1 for 1 I wouldn't do the deal. I think Dubi's worth is just so much more to this team than anything Weiss is going to bring. Plus call me crazy, but I have no problem giving the top live pivot to Christensen next season. I would love to see what kind of offensive numbers he puts out in a full season, top line minutes with Goborik on the Right and Prospal on the left. Cheap alternative to a cap-strapped team.

I may be the only one here, but I do want to see Dan Girardi back.

I think defenseman when the play together for extended periods of time(years) develop a bond that can't happen in say 1 season. I believe Girardi can fit into the picture next season as somewhat of a cheap cap hit too. My vote is to keep him, and rid the team of Rozy and Redden. That's $11.5 in capspace. I think Volchenkov should be the first player targeted and 4, maybe even 5mil is not out of the question, but only if...Rozy and Redden are gone.

Being Glen is of that old mode I don't see him sending Redden to the minors as much as many here would like to believe. My opinion is that he is traded maybe at the draft. Maybe some assets have to go with him to his new home to rid the team of the space.

Not the best lineup, but signing Kovalchuk will take up most of the cap room therefore I no longer want him due to his high salary demands. While making this lineup I noticed a glut of fowards and due to that i could see Dubinsky getting traded. Also Carlo Coliacovo can be switched with another UFA d-man with a cap hit around 1.5.
