Kovy can sign an 8 year deal here for good money, then go home when he is in his mid 30's and cash out there for the rest of his days.
Seriously, if he gets $10 mill a year for 8 years here with a contender, he can still get a huge payday in the KHL when he is older.
Also, Kovalchuk can move up high on all time goal scoring lists and perhaps make it to the Hall of Fame. I'm not sure if any of that matters to him but I'm guessing it does. I'm also guessing teams like LA, Toronto, Boston will be throwing some serious money at him this summer.

This. Start losing A-grade talent already to them, and it will only start the downward spiral of more players in contract years to debate about it. Money talks to a lot of these guys. And lets not forget that if Bettman screws the pooch and tells them they are not allowed in the Sochi Olympics, I won't be surprised if a lot start packing. I wonder when the NHLPA is going to demand the answer to that though...
