World Cup in 2012?

Ignoring the contentious Sochi issue, will we at least get a World cup out of this?

It needs to stay a quadrenial fixture, with or without the Winter Olympics.

In addition to Nagano, not having another international tourney until Slat Lake really hurt the sport.

I seriously think they should hold World Cup 2012, 2016, 2020... Soccer does that and works great. 1996 and 2004 World Cups were great.

I hope so, 8 teams instead of 12 will make the games that much better as no team will be an somewhat easy win.

Yeah, that's a great start. It's beginning to get hard to be in quadruple gold club (that Swedish invention of triple gold is flatout idiotic).

As long as it's not as crappy as the last one was, I'm all for it.

They had one in 2004, so they aren't stopping because they're in the Olympics.

And I believe last time had games in both North America and Europe, and the finals were in North America.

Tentatively scheduled for 2011 (Canada hosting). Nothing is finalized of course.

Personally I would rather settle for a best of 7 series vs the US.

I think all the teams had home games. Then semi-finals and finals were in Eastern North America (Montreal, Toronto, maybe Boston or so).

edit. Here's the list of venues they played in:

* Air Canada Centre – Toronto, Ontario, Canada
* Bell Centre – Montreal, Quebec, Canada
* Globe Arena – Stockholm, Sweden
* Hartwall Areena – Helsinki, Finland
* Kölnarena – Cologne, Germany
* Sazka Arena – Prague, Czech Republic
* Xcel Energy Center – St. Paul, Minnesota, United States

I know this might be slightly OT but...why did they get rid of the Canada Cup?

I think it was too biased name. Tournament is virtually the same.

Reminded them too much of Alan Eagleson?

No seriously, I hate to admit it but those were actually great tournaments he did despite being a scoundrel

Yes like the above posters have said I believe a 2011 tournament is in order. After those Olympics how could they not want to keep this going? I think it would be a wise move. And I think Stamkos and Green would even find spots on these teams

-A 'best on best' every two years is too often, why mess with the Olympics. -The level of hockey in February is far better than in late summer. -It is lame and unfair if the important games are always in North America. -It is too taxing on smaller countries with great players but little depth; have to ask the same set of players to step up and represent too often. -A 'best on best' every two years would damage the World Championships. -It shouldn't be called a World Cup unless there is a proper host nation.

There I think I got all my points in rather briefly.

European countries have never applied to host as far as I know.

Isn't the World Cup Of Hockey viewed as merely a exhibition tournament? Most Europeans don't see it being a valid tournament as it not not recognized by the IIHF. Winning doesn't even give you points towards the World Rankings.

Even if they did it is a NHL run tournament. Meaning the semi's and finals must be in North America for perfect viewing for there audience.

"Europeans don't care" is such lame reasoning.

Not even Canadians care about the World Championships and they've only been hosted in North America twice, but you don't hear us *****ing.
