2002 Team Canada vs. 2010 Team Canada

Canada's wins at both the 2002 Olympics and 2010 had so many similarities, it is almost eerie. Both teams started out slow, had people start to doubt them, before they got increasingly stronger every game and eventually won the Gold Medal.

Which team was better though?

2002 Team Canada:

Kariya - Lemieux - Yzerman
Gagne - Sakic - Iginla
Shanahan - Nieuwendyk - Fleury
Smyth - Lindros - Nolan
Peca

Pronger - MacInnis
Blake - Jovanovski
Niedermayer - Foote
Brewer

Brodeur
Joseph
Belfour

2010 Team Canada:

Staal - Crosby - Iginla
Marleau - Thornton - Heatley
Morrow - Getzlaf - Perry
Nash - Toews - Richards
Bergeron

Niedermayer - Weber
Pronger - Boyle
Keith - Doughty
Seabrook

Luongo
Brodeur
Fleury

yeesh, you look at the names on the 02 roster and wow. But at the same time that 02 team was old(er). If 2010 took on 2002 I'd bet 2010 comes out ahead.

I like the brodeur (and even cujo) of 2002, luongo was a tad too shaky tonight for my liking.

2010's d and o might have an edge though.

This was done before?

IMO

the difference will be Sakic,

the 2010 team played great as a unit, nobody stood out and dominated the final game.

Sakic dismantled the US in 02 with 4 points in the final game, that American team imo was better then this one in all aspects except for goaltending.

for anyone who forgot or didn't get to watch that game.

Sakic dominated that game, he created many many scoring chances for his team, could've easily had 6-7 points in that one game.

I agree. Sakic's cluch-ness puts that team over the top. Imo this 2010 team doesn't have that one superstar who will step up every single time.

Super Joe FTW!

Let's just say, when the game is on the line, I'd rather have Joe Sakic out there than any player on Team Canada now (yes even Joe Thornton because he's so clutch )

He really was super in that game though,

you can tell he wanted gold more then anybody else on either team.

1 and a half minutes left in the third, 2 goal lead on the American's, the guy is going full speed at the end of his shift to get the double insurance goal.

i thought your 2010 team was better honestly. the 2002 names look more impressive, but that was also an older team with more credentials. the 2002 team dodged a huge bullet by not having to play sweden, who spanked them really badly earlier in the tournament.

The '02 team had more veteran players that had already made their mark on the NHL, while the '10 team had a lot of players that Canadian fans had never been able to follow before the tournament.

That's why I voted for the '02 team.

02 for Mario, Yzerman and Sakic alone.

But I guess that's why this one is so special. And it was at home.

02 had that great first line with lemieux, along with sakic being on fire for most of the tournament and dominating the gold medal game

10 team i think had better depth and a better blueline, the fact that it is so young is scary because these guys could be playing together internationally for a while

i'll say the 10 team because the usa team they had to defeat in the gold medal game was far superior to the 02 usa team

The goaltending makes this a tough one for me.

Luongo wasn't bad, but I never felt he was great either. Some shakey moments and some real good saves, but at times he didn't look all that comfortable in the crease. The goaltending for Canada in 2002 could flat out win games, a quality Luongo never showed in this tournament(even if he has shown it in the past).

On the other hand, the 2010 team has a great combination of youth, size, and speed that might make the difference against an older 2002 team.

Too close to decide.

Pronger 2002 >>>> Pronger now. And i think Pronger was OK on this Olympics. But not great for his own standarts.

Brodeur 2002 >>>> Luongo now.

Sakis and Lemieux are better than everything that Canada have. Shanahan and McInnis in prime = beatiful.

Canada 2002 was better team but 2010 team can end up as one of most underrated in history. That team was so good.
