I would trade Morrow, but I don't think the Stars will, however if a team makes the right offer they might decide to do it.

I was thinking that Ott would get more than 3 Million on the free agent market. I figured closer to $4 mill, theres always some team willing to overpay (see NYR). I don't think this is an overpayment but I don't like the NTC. What does everyone else think he would have got as a UFA?

Yeah, because a NTC means a player won't ever be traded. Right, Brad Richards?

Get this -- if you combine Ott and Avery's cap hits and assume that payroll stays around its current level, the Stars will be dedicating 10% of their usable cap toward the agitator position... yikes.

The contract isn't that bad.

Ott is one of the few yappers on this team. Take Ott out of the lockerroom, and who is your vocal leader? Turco? Modano?

If no one was offering anything of value, then I don't blame Neuwy for throwing in the dollars (and NTC) to retain him.

I'm not sure I put a lot of stock in the NTC at this point. If Jason knows that, he needs to say how because it ain't in the DMN, on Andrews, in the Stars release or anywhere else we would consider "official."

You know, that's a really good point. While the latter two are probably gone at the end of the year, it would leave a group composed of a quiet Morrow, a non-emotional Richards, Ribeiro and Robidas to comprise the main leadership within the room without Ott. It's pretty well known Ott is considered a leader on the team, and I'd be shocked if he isn't a vocal leader rather than a leader by example.

Hmm. According to that page, "CapGeek.com uses league, team and player sources for details of contracts signed since June 30." They seem to be fairly accurate, but I'd like a little more confirmation, preferably from a writer who actually covers the team on a regular or semi-regular basis. An NTC seems like it's a big enough deal that it would have been mentioned through one of the more team-connected sources.

But thanks for the sourcing. Now I get to go dig into them some more.

Well, since it's Stars related.
Capgeek reported the Stars signed Ondrej Roman to a ELC then about a week later the Stars announced it.

Capgeek is very reliable so far. I haven't seen them post any Stars new that ended up being untrue. And like has been mentioned, they seem to post things much earlier than anyone else. Occasionally it's slightly incomplete. When they orignally posted Roman, they posted his cap number based only on his salary. I'm assuming they didn't have any bonus informaiton on him yet. So take it for what it's worth.

It says NTC, but it doesn't give details, so it could be limited which might not make it too bad.

One thing to note about Neals upcoming RFA status. I believe if he was arbitration eligible, the Stars might have been the ones to elect arbitration rather than the player. Once arbitration has been elected, a player cannot receive an offer sheet. So he loses that as an option to get a big, long term offer.

Had the Stars not come to a contract agreement with Eriksson this season, I have no doubt they would have elected arbitration on him this summer to keep him away from any offer sheets.

Well, it doesn't. The point of extending a player isn't to improve the team but to prevent the team from getting worse. There's no doubt in my mind that we are indeed a better team with Steve Ott than we are without him.

Isn't the goal to improve the team to become a Stanley Cup contender eventually?
How is paying a third line forward $2.95 million, when you have huge holes at other positions help in that regard?

That's not even considering the Stars will be at or barely above the cap floor no matter if there's a new owner or not.

What would you guys prefer the Stars to have done? If they let Ott walk, as there seemed to be no reasonable trade offers, there was no way the team would replace him in free agency. And there isn't a prospect being held back like Vish, so I don't see why everyone is pulling their hair out about this deal.

We don't really know that. Wasn't there some quote about Joe not being "blown away" by the offers for Turco and Ott? There's a pretty big gulf between getting blown away and finding a fair deal.

Rumor is NJ offered a 2nd and a prospect for Ott. If the prospect was at least mid tier he should have taken it.

A one-year NTC is odd, but I like it better than a full four-year NTC.

Case - some of the people are pulling their hair out because they have wanted to get rid of him for years. Others have pushed the "sell off everyone for picks and prospects" every year as long as I can remember.
