Fighting in Olympic Hockey

Is there a reason why there's no fighting or is it just another IOC sportsmanship thing? Maybe they don't wanna start a world war? lol

Because it defeats the whole purpose of the Olympics, which is to maintain peace in the world by playing sports and having fun.

Amen bro, I've always hated two dudes just grabbing each others sweaters for 2 minutes (also known as hockey fighting), plus most of the teams aren't made up of people labeled as "fighters".

My guess is because the Olympics involve nothing but star caliber players no coaches want to see their guys (a la Crosby, Ovechkin, Gaborik) get hurt or have them risk losing the games/a medal by taking unnecessary penalties because of silly goonery.

Plus if they sustained injury in a fight it could really haunt them and their regular teams when the regular season resumes.

Real hockey fights are great...Iginla vs. Lecavalier in the Cup finals in '04 is a perfect example.

Or because players are given a match penalty and kicked out of the game.

It is my understanding that fighting is typically not tolerated in international hockey. The Olympic men's hockey tournament is no exception.

Even boxing isn't the same at the Olympics. Its more amateur, with face guards. Very different from pro boxing.

fighting under IIHF rules:

- game misconduct and ejection
- suspension from next game.

so yeah, that's why there's no fighting. the penalty is extremely severe.

Did anyone even miss the fights?

Wouldn't have made anything better if, say, Getzlaf and Jack Johnson escalated into a fight.

The IOC goes way overboard with this though. Look at their stupid helmet rule too, it basically cost team czech the game vs finland.

This is one reason NHL needs to get away from IOC olympic tourney, their rules are so dumb. Shootouts decideding elim games, 20 minute 4v4 OT period?? WHAT A JOKE.

NHL needs to get on board with KHL and other Euro leagues to get back to World Cups in September (after 2014). They will be able to decide rules, hosting arrangements, and split the money.
