I blame BÅG for this one. The problem with BÅG is that he coaches the team like a Pee-wee team and just blindly keep rolling all 4 units one after another. In other words he doesnt coach. At all.
He didnt let the best players get more ice time. For example the Sedins had 8 minutes of ice time after two periods.
He used 8 D-men.
He didnt use special PP-units. They didnt even practice PP at all which he ofc got bashed for in the media.
He put the most clutch scorer we have, Franzén, on the 4th line. Why on earth didnt he put Franzén with Zetterberg in the first place? They have good chemistry and they are used to play with each other.
He didnt act when everybody saw that some units didnt click, like Weinhandl with the Sedins for example.
BÅG did win us the olympics and WC in 2006, but it is time for someone else to take over now.
1. NHL-sized rink. 2, a. Too many old and tired players who won the olympics last time and without enough desperation and desire for the gold medal (think Canada 2006). Same goes for the coach.
2, b. Hence not enough young, hungry players. 3. Should have lost the game against Finland for tactical reasons.
This. Chicago and Washington are showing that youth is the way to go (the key players on those teams are how old?) and look at what the US did as the youngest team in the tournament... Sweden took too many players that just didn't have enough in the tank anymore.
Like Canada taking Bertuzzi, Blake, Foote, Draper in '06 etc - Sweden made a mistake bringing Modin, Forsberg, Naslund, Ohlund.. Those are obviously talented players but did they bring anything that Samuelsson/Edler/Bergfors/etc couldn't have done better? Samuelsson is what, 32 - but still significantly better/younger than Modin, at least.
Näslund wasn't picked, Öhlund was good enough, and Modin played his roll really well.
Samuelsson should have been picked since Holmström got injured. We really missed someone who could crash the net and do the dirty work in the offensive zone.
Weinhandl shouldn't have been picked, neither should Johansson. Hörnqvist.. in hindsight, no.
The lines were all crap aswell.
Lets talk about the Swedes who IMO were one of the "under the radar" giants. I really expected them to at the very least playing for bronze. They had the 3rd best goalie in the NHL in King Henrik, arguably the hottest tandem coming into the tournament in the twins, the guy centering the leagues leading point getter and two of the best 2 way players in Zetterberg, Alfredsson. Zetterberg, a guy whos made back to back Cup final appearances, I thought he was going to be putting on a defensive clinic. Heck even Forsberg played who IMO could have been the sleeping giant. They however, were a complete disaster, they never gelled, didnt seem to have it together.
Biggest mistakes from the roster IMO - adding Modin, Magnus Johanson and no Hedman.
Actually Russia, USA, and Canada have/had superior goaltending to Sweden. Nabby had a horrible game but I was calling for Bryzgalov to start all along, who by the way had a far better Olympics than Lundqvist, and has been better in the NHL this year too.
BÅG made stupid picks
BÅG made them play a useless tactic
BÅG made stupid choices when putting lines together
BÅG didn't change the stupid lines after everyone saw how stupid they were
BÅG picked and played eight defenders through the whole tourny
BÅG didn't have the team practise PP, he didn't see a reason
BÅG played the Sedin's 13 minutes in the final, and didn't do squat about Weinhandl who clearly didn't fit in on that line.
