Me too, though he is probably an Oiler who has actually has some value. I must like watching him.

This is the first of a lot of ugly trades we'll be seeing in the next little bit.

Good to see us getting some (potential) long term value though.

I would have preferred to keep him over Gilbert, but I think it's actually a reasonable return. Grebs is an RFA, correct? He wasn't that easy to sign last year, and his QO would have far outstripped his worth based on this year's play. His Olympic appearance would have probably only made contract negs more difficult. Overall, I'm ok with it...

It might have been better to wait until the summer to see what you can pick up on the free agent market and draft day before opening up more holes on defense.

I agree this is a great trade:

Grebs was coming back at a 3.85 mil cap hit or walking. (10% of current cap hit = minimum raise during RFA)

A second rnd pick could provide us with a great opportunity to move up via trade of 2picks for 1, or perhaps a player in a few years when they actually can help us.

I'm happy with it.

If we hung on to Grebs, I don't think he would have accepted a deal less than what he's received to this point. With his performance, if we tried to re-sign him at his current rate, Tambo would have been torched by the media and fans.

Grebs has been absolutely terrible this year but I will miss him.

So.... do you think Tambo is stockpiling picks for the draft or for another trade?

It is why I was saying that I wouldn't not be rushing to make trades until the summer. I said it two weeks ago, I was no hurry to dump players at the deadline.

Salary dump pure and simple.
The unfortunate thing is that we are salary dumping 26 year olds rather than over 30 year olds who make too much and are even worse. (And I'm not a fan of Grebs by any means.)

Doubtful the Oilers can move Staois or even Souray ... I think they had to move Grebs as a result, he may have been the only d-man we outside of Visnovsky that's easy to move.

Well I guess we needed to clear up some cap space.

I would have thought after Dominic Moore and Jordan Leopold both UFAs fetched 2nd round picks. That maybe you could late 1st rounder or a 2nd & a 3rd for Grebs who is an RFA.

I guess the difference is Nashville eating up cap space in future for us?

I am a Grebs fan for sure and disappointed to see him go. But I am happy on one hand if this means we are not moving Lubo out.

Grebeshkov really wasn't worth anything and this was a cap move. I want some legit NHLers but I'm satisfied with adding another 2nd rounder.

I don't like the trade at all. He traded a player at his lowest possible value.

IMO this one will come back and bite us in the butt.

It would have been nice if Grebs had gotten some solid playing time with Lubo for some stretches this season, to make him look good like last year. Would've been a 2nd+, at least. Oh well. Now we know why they called up 2 Falcons defencemen.

I wonder if this pick will be used to sweeten a deal where they're moving out Horcoff or someone like that.

I have a feeling Grebs is going to be playing in the KHL next year. I could be wrong, but I think Tambo is using that second round or the Oilers for second round pick for a future trade down the road.

The Oilers just sawed 3.15 million off their salary cap - regardless of his play this season I'll bet that Grebs would have taken the Oilers to the woodshed for the same number this summer. Good trade.

If you were the OTHER team would you want the 26 year olds or the "over 30 year olds who make too much and are even worse"?

With the position we're in, trades will have to work more for the other team than for us.

there's also been rumours floating for awhile that Grebs would like to head to the KHL - would people view this as such a bad move if he left for the KHL after this year?

Grebeshkov turned over his plane ticket on the way to the terminal.

I agree. Either he signs somewhere else next year, or we have to pay him $3.5M+ per year to sign him. At that price, he simply is not worth it.

So the fact that we got anything for him is a bonus IMO.
