2009/10 - Lines Discussion - (ES/PP/PK) - Part II

1st thread

Once the season starts, I'll just change the thread title and it can stay open for line discussion throughout the season.

Carry on...

JVR with Giroux is all that matters.

I'm still not sure on who will center the 3rd and 4th lines but definitely JVR and Giroux. I even thought of that happening someday last year when Giroux came up.

I've only seen JVR play in a few WJC games and these two broadcast preseason games - but I have noticed that he passes with his backhand very well. He has excellent hands in traffic and also has great vision. He does tend to try and be a bit too fancy when he has nowhere to go - but that's fine with me if he's only doing it in the offensive zone. I also haven't seen him do anything stupid in the neutral or defensive zones.

That being said I think he fits in on any of the top three lines. I know he has looked good with Giroux but so has everybody else. Pyorala seems like a guy who might have success on any line. Has JVR played with Carter yet at all? I think they'd do great together as JVR is a similar player with great passing skills. Hell - he'd be flat out awesome with Gagne and Richards.

Gagne Richards Pyorala
Hartnell Carter JVR
Laperriere Giroux Briere
Carcillo Betts Asham

Pronger Carle
Timmonen Coburn
Parent Jones
OKT/Syvret

As far as the defense goes I think the top two pairings are set. If Carle truly is stronger and Pronger can elevate his play then that's a great pairing. Timmonen Coburn was downright awesome in the 07/08 playoffs and hopefully can stick together all season. I hate Jones and would take just about anybody over him for the 3rd pairing but we know that won't happen. Somebody on the D is bound to miss time - we can only hope it's Jones. In which case I would dress OKT against the bigger/nastier teams and Syvret against the quicker teams.

This is going to be one sick team if you ask me...

Well ideally I'd like to see

Gagne-Richards-Laperriere
Hartnell-Carter-Pyorala
JVR-Giroux-Briere
Carcillo-Betts-Asham
Powe

Pronger-Carle
Timonen-Coburn
Syvret-Parent
Jones

but we know that probably won't happen

If JVR (and his $1.65 million cap hit) are to stay up with the team, Jones would have to go, and Tollefsen would be in his place as #7 defenseman. . . and I am fine with that.

Gagne-Richards-Briere = can we just test what the offensive limits of this combo are?
Hartnell-Carter-Pyorala
JVR-Giroux-Laperriere
Carcillo-Betts-Asham

Pronger\Carle
Timo\Coburn
Jones\Parent
Syvret (OKT looks like he'll lose games for us) Bring back Ossie!

Solid LW & C:

Gagne-Richards-Pyroala
Hartnell-Carter-Powe
Giroux-Briere-JVR --> that would be a sick ********n line
Carcillo-Laperriere-Asham

Everyone we have at RW is interchangeable. I could see Asham or Powe playing with Gagne and Richards or with Giroux and Briere... either way we have a solid ass team.

Pronger-Carle
Timonen-Parent
Coburn-Tollefsen

Im hoping we trade/drop Jones, he's expendable enough to free up some cap room (2.75M hit) for JVR and he will be an UFA next year.

I'm basing my lines on the idea that they're going to continue with the "pairs" thing instead of stacking their top 6 onto 2 lines. I can't envision these predictions with Laperierre, Asham, Carcillo, etc. in the top 6. JVR may be young and inexperienced, but he has the skill I'd like to see from a top 6 guy. I have no first-hand knowledge of Pyorala, and I'm merely basing it on preseason reports. I believe in Powe getting a bigger role, but I guess he could be switched with Ian. Jones and Carcillo being out is merely wishful thinking on my part.

Gagne - Richards - JVR
Hartnell - Carter - Pyorala
Powe - Giroux - Briere
Laperriere - Betts - Asham
Carcillo

Pronger - Carle
Timmonen - Coburn
Parent - Syvret/anyone but Jones
Jones, OKT

I like it, too. If Stevens is going to go with the offensive pairings, that is probably the best distribution.

jvr giroux briere would be too defensively unstable.

My ideal lines:

Gagne-Richards-Powe/Briere
Hartnell-Carter-Pyorala
JVR-Giroux-Briere/Powe
Laperriere-Betts-Asham
Carcillo

Pronger-Carle
Timonen-Coburn
Syvret-Parent
Tollefsen

Trade/waive Jones. Trade Cote/send him to the minors. Sub Carcillo and Asham out on a game-by-game basis. Seems pretty ideal to me. I think Pyorala could work really well with JVR and Giroux, but I don't see anyone else fitting the Hartnell-Carter line as well.

Doesn't look too far off from what will happen either.

JVR and Giroux are both very solid defensively.

That was my first thought as well.

Powe, Giroux and Briere did well on a line together in the playoffs though, so who knows?

I like the offense because we keep all three of Pyorala, Powe, and JVR on the Flyers. However, do you think the third line with Giroux, Briere, and JVR might get pushed around too easily- I know JVR is big, but i've gotten the impression from a few comments I've read on here that he hasn't filled out enough yet (also he looks kind of scrawny and stick-like in some of his pictures) to be the guy on the line that can protect the smaller guys some, but then again I could be entirely wrong.

I also agree with waiving or trading Jones. On defense I would put Coburn with Timonen, Parent with Syvret, and make OKT the seventh d-man.

iirc, giroux was recently called out to improve his defensive game

Regardless, there's still two undeniable points.

1) Last year Giroux-Briere-Powe was our best line and extremely good in the playoffs. Very potent. So why wouldn't a more skilled line of JVR-Giroux-Briere be just as good, if not better?

2) This is the whole point of rolling three scoring lines. No team that I can think of can cover three potent scoring lines like we have. It they're the third line then they're likely to be scoring a lot, which should more then make up for any goals that get scored on them.

Me too!

In fact, I refuse to start a franchise until JVR is on the team.
Flyers players always seem to have problems in the game. Last year, Parent had the wrong pic attached, there's still no pic of Giroux, and JVR is absent from Flyers and the AHL roster.

because one rookie with zero nhl experience, another entering his first full year, and a smallish sniper who gets knocked off the puck easily is going to be very prone to getting scored on. i am not saying the line won't be good or better than a powe-giroux-briere. just that it is wishful thinking they will click as well as you say they will as soon as we would all like.
