So would you people rather have Pronger on the Caps or Pens?

What crippled us is putting Jones on re-entry etc.
Yep!
People here just remember the Pronger trade the most, that's why every fool around here complains about it. If we have gotten a decent goalie (Ellis, Roloson, Biron) or even Vokoun, everybody would be ecstatic. And I really don't think that the Pronger-trade has held us up getting a goalie. It's the fact that we don't have movable assets.

Yeah, but those things happen. But since it happened before the trade deadline, he should've realized that his plan A (Emery) is not working, so he should go to plan B. And a GM for the Flyers, who wants to win the cup, should NOT have Mike Leighton as a starter in the playoffs as a plan B. Period.
Sure, a good goalie would cost us. Having Leighton cool off will not cost us. It'll kill us.

No it's not. They had Parent to start the year, and while Laviolette was here in December. That doesn't work.

But that's not the point, the overpayment is.
I'm pretty confident Anaheim would have accepted less if Holmgren had played his cards right. At least try to include one of the no movement guys in the trade.
I'm pretty sure at least some of them would be willing to waive to go to the Ducks. And two firsts, a good prospects and a solid 2nd liner is too much for a 35 (36?) year old Dman no matter how good he is.

Not very far from the best at least. Hawks, Wings, us, them. Flames.

The Flyers didn't make a move. It was confirmed a bit ago.

Honestly, the only player moved that I had any moderate interest in was MacArthur. We probably could have gotten him for that price too, but it would have been hard to hold onto him as an RFA.

Bob Murray is on record as saying that no other offer made for Pronger was close. It was clear to me that Holmgren identified what Murray would say yes to on a take-it-or-leave-it offer.

Washington, Pittsburgh, New Jersey (Kovalchuk trade), and arguably Buffalo all got better. The Flyers did not.

****.

For a second, TSN's trade tracker said that Nashville acquired Dustin Boyd from Nashville for a 4th Round Pick. It changed as I hit Print Screen. Barely missed catching them in the act. Haha.

Maybe my english is bad. I'm not saying Pronger hasn't been good for us or that I don't want him. I'm saying we overpaid and moved the only real movable assets we had for him. That is ok if Pronger would have been the last missing piece. Turns out he wasn't (unless we win..... Yeah, right). That trade crippled us alot more than Jones on re-entry even if that move is a far bigger misstake. Cap isn't our biggest issue, lack of assets is.

I agree that lack of assets killed this team more than lack of cap space. If you have assets, you can tip toe around the cap problems.

Definitely not this one. Last year was pretty deep, but the Flyers are in a position where in four or five years when the late first round guys are really going to be able to make a difference the rest of the team may not be in that same position. Who knows who will be here in a few years. The past few drafts have been ridiculously deep, but historically that is not how it works. 1st round picks in hockey aren't like NFL or NBA. They take more time to develop for the most part aside from a few very special guys. I mean it took Richards and Carter a few years to really be able to make a difference. Even JVR isn't really making a real difference now. Not saying he is a bust or anything like that, but its not like if we had someone else there he would be doing anything differently. The bottom line is that if the Flyers didn't make the Pronger trade, aside from maybe acquiring a player today (which doesn't mean anything really. It's not like a pre-requisite for winning the Cup is making a trade) they'd be in the same position except they would have a weaker blue line.
