No 1st rounders? No prospects? For our best defenseman? Goddamnit.

I'm concerned that Whitney's 59 point season was a product of being the #2 d-man on a team with Crosby, Malkin, etc.

His numbers in ANA this year are very underwhelming, and I'm concerned that we have another Tom Gilbert (with a frighteningly similar contract) on our hands here.

So we traded Visnovksy for essentially a little meaner Tom Gilbert when we were trying to get rid of Tom Gilbert? Doesn't make sense to me, but to be fair, I haven't followed Whitney very closely.

Agreed

I will just add my comment I posted in another thread here.

He is 6'4" and 220 pounds. Still young and did have a 59 point season. Oil shed salary and get bigger. I'm sure there's more to this trade though.. perhaps a 2nd rounder or a 3rd.

This is a rebuild and I have now warmed up to it from my initial reaction. Point wise, he only has a couple less points than Vis.

Edit:

4 less pts to be exact.
I actually like this trade. I was one whom pleaded for a rebuild and now we're getting it. Good trade. I'm sure more will happen come draft day after we draft Hall/Seguin.

Did Anaheim even throw in one of their two first rounders?

A rebuild does not take one year, so every penny of that 5.6M$ would be wasted. At least with Whitney he will still be young enough by the time the rebuild is finished that he might still be useful. And he's not as good as Lubo, so that means better draft picks over the next few years.

Of course, most of the people crying for a rebuild probably figured that meant one year of sucking, and are now complaining about the rebuilding process.
The problem is we didn't get any draft picks. I'm sure they could have got a draft pick + whitney. No way is vis for whitney, 1 for 1 a good trade, that is what everyone is pissed about.

This was not the right deal.
What would you keep him for, though? His time here would be wasted.

This could possibly go down as the worst trade the Oilers have ever made!!

I say this including gretz, mess, and Smyth!!

To justify the statement:

Vis was not the greatest player ever but we got screwed here badly. How does Moreau stay, and Vis leaves without gettng an actual return.

I am now firmly in the fire Tambellini camp!!

Good for Lubo, hes playing back where he wanted to be, or at least as close as he is going to get to it for the rest of his career.

Initially I'm a little disappointed but I can see the positives in this trade. The team saves salary, gets a younger player who is in his prime during the rebuild, can potentially put up the same offense as Lubo, and has more size.

There's more to this trade as many sources have said. Things are being worked out.

It is scarcely possible to overstate to how bad a deal this is for the Edmonton Oilers.

It is a rebuild people!

Seems like you all want your cake and eat it too.

We were not going to get equal players back when you are rebuilding, you get younger players and you dump salary.

That defines a rebuild. Welcome to the rebuild!

Whitney was playing 25 mins/game for Randy Carlyle. I hope thats in indication of his ability to be a stronger defensive player than what 99% of us have heard about him.

Visnovsky was not having fun playing here and now he'll at least get a chance to play for a contender.

Whitney can be a good building piece. Nice to see that things are getting done finally.
This.

When you are in a rebuild you get rid of older players on expensive contracts. Whitney is both younger and cheaper. Unless you think the Oilers are going to be competitive within 2-3 years it doesn't make sense to keep Visnovsky around because he isn't part of the future of this team. In 2-3 years the Oilers will be rid of most of their old guys on bloated contracts (Pisani, Moreau, Staios, Souray) and clearly he isn't part of the future.

They may have been able to get a bigger return for Vis but Whitney is a nice building block with a good upside and clearly there wasn't a better offer on the table. Plus, this all but guarantees the Oilers finishing in last this season.

I hope you don't really believe what you wrote there about it being worse than the Gretzky trade.

are you idiots really complaining? give me a break holy ****

whitney look at his stats, he's slowed down a little...hes a big body, he has the offensive ability and defensive..

hes 1.6m cheaper and signed longer.

we get younger and save some money...

quit complaining its a good deal for both teams.

Im happy with the trade. Vish is getting older and made 5.6 mil, Whitney will be coming into his prime shortly and is locked up at a decent rate of 4 mil. He has some good seasons under his belt, is big and can hit.

These are the kinds of moves that give me hope that managment has a good plan for where we want to be in a few seasons.

Isn't Ryan Whitney just a Gilbert clone? We sooo needed another Gilbert.
