Breadcrumbs

So with the dealing of lubo, grebs and most probably souray, do you think tambo is going to draft Fowler, i really hope not, but with those three out of mix we definately are going to have to rebuild our d corps, or does tambo go free agent route and pick up Hamhuis/volchenkov types.

discuss.

The smart thing would be to draft Hall/Seguin and sign Hamhuis IMO. Stability on the back-end would allow for youth to learn/progress a bit more up front.

Always is said, and should be noted that you draft the best player. Don't draft based upon current need.If they draft Fowler and Hall is available that'd be a little more than a head scratcher.

It shouldn't be too difficult for them to pick up a couple good stay-at-home D types, which is exactly what we've needed for quite some time, through FA.

agreed, but what kind of price range does hamhuis fall into and with a fairly young guy like hamhuis do you give him long term deal to grow with rest of the youth

We may need defensemen but Penner, Hemsky and Gagner are the only guys up front that we can pretty much guarantee will score at least 17 goals...and I'd say no one is guarantee for 25 goals. So I'd argue that Hall is even more needed than help on the back end(Fowler) because if we're taking immediate needs into consideration a young forward is usually more effective than a young defenseman. I'd prefer to have a more experienced group(25-32 years old) on the back end while our forwards are so young anyways.

I definitely think that Tambo and co will draft Fowler.

That is if we end up with the 3rd pick overall.

The bigger question is if Hamhuis would even consider coming here during a rebuild.

Zero chance unless you massively overpay. Aim a lot lower in the free agent pool, guys.

No way we draft Fowler. I would love to sign Hamhuis, he is young and reliable, he will probably get 4 mill a year.

I don't see us dealing Souray though, we would have to take a bad contract back to do so. Souray for Briere or something is the only way. No thanks.

Agreed. We need to hand out short term deals to guys that fly under the radar and will be willing to work for their next contract.

wat would you say about a guy like Z. Michalek, pretty unknown, decent player maybe he signs at a good number and plays well with the youth

Theres no reason to spend the kind of dough that Hamhuis or Volchenkov are going to be asking for. Here's the list of UFA dmen this summer, buy low and short and sell high come deadline day.

after looking at the list the lower priced helpful dman availible i would like to see in order are.

sutton( older stay at home to tutor smid, peckham, plante) 2million or less for 2yrs
michalek- depends on price he wants
foster- big shot underratted dman is youngish
volchenkov- price but if souray is traded good replacement at least he can skate backwards (overpay over 2-3yrs so he can be traded when our young dmen are ready to take over)
Mara/Corvo to run the PP whoever is cheaper

IMO if tambo can land 2 or three of these guys and ship souray out for picks/prospects

THOUGHTS?

If the Oilers are drafting one or two and draft Fowler, I will join your mob. You get the pleasure of leading it.

But frankly I don't think there is a chance in hell that happens.

Yeah as much as some people (myself included) don't like the job management has been doing, it's crazy to think they'd draft Fowler at 1 or 2. It's one thing to question their decisions, it's another to start assuming they have no idea what they're doing.

Agreed, this management team has made a number of screw-ups and created the mess this team is in.

But that does not mean they are complete morons.

There is quite a drop off to Fowler, there is no way the Oilers pick him at 1 or 2.

I'd like Foster too, but I doubt the Oilers look to go after someone with a 4M+ cap hit like Michalek and Volchenkov will get.

probably right but thats why I had sutton as my 1st target because he's reliable and can help young guys.

foster realiscially should be our 2nd guy and not the mid whales

it doesnt even need explanation. and the logic behind the "magic 8-ball" prediction is pretty bad.

Two avenues not mentioned:

Find teams with decent blue-liners they need to jettison to create spending room under the cap and try and trade for them.

Scour Europe and find the next great Jan Hejda.
