Eberle to join the Falcons

http://communities.canada.com/REGINA...s-callups.aspx

Oilers assistant GM Kevin Prendergast confirmed to the Leader-Post earlier today that Eberle won’t be fast-tracked to the big club when the Regina Pats’ season ends on March 13. However, the 19-year-old winger is slated to be called up to Edmonton’s top minor-league affiliate, the AHL’s Springfield Falcons. Prendergast said the Oilers want to be cautious with Eberle’s development and not put too much pressure on him, especially considering the expectations that fans are bound to place on the Team Canada star.

Prendergast did qualify his remarks by noting that there’s a chance Eberle could earn a brief NHL promotion if he lights it up in Springfield or if a callup is necessitated by injuries.

Nice. Good news. I'm glad they are being cautious with Ebs.

Nice to see them using their heads. No doubt fans will expect him to carry the team when he gets to edmonton. Let him develop properly, and get used to the faster game/bigger players in the A.

Very nice move. Credit to the management on this one. No need to put him on the big club yet. AHL is a good testing ground.

What's Eberle's size & weight now? I seem to recall that he really needed to bulk up if he wants sustained success at the NHL level.

Well put.

I'm glad they're lowering people's expectations already with saying that they don't want to rush him, hopefully people don't jump off the deep end if he starts next year in the AHL.

I think this has something to do with 10 games played and it burns off a year of his deal. I would really be surprised if we dont see him in the last 10 games.

Fantastic, I hope I get to see him in Oiler silks this year and I can't wait to see him on the team next year.

This is always good to hear. Hopefully they take the same tact with MPS and the others when the time comes.

good call by the Oilers. but I agree with anyone who thinks he'll be with us for a few games. perhaps the last 2 or 3, just to get his feet wet?

I sure hope this doesn't burn a year off his non-UFA status. If it does, heads should roll.

I hope he gets a call up for the last game or two. Give him a preview of the speed and strength he's gonna need to build up over the summer.

I disagree with this approach entirely. Practicing with and being around the big club, even in a horrid year, is better than playing a bunch more games in the A.

He'll probably get called up once there's less than ten games left in the season, so that it doesn't burn a year of his contract.

He needs to play games to burn contract years. He should be here ASAP. Hell, I'd even start practicing him with some guys he might play with next year and get them working as a unit so there's something to think about during the summer.

Long-term development planning is something we currently lack.

Signing a guy like Jagr would take attention away from guys like Hall/Seguin, Eberle and perhaps MPS.

For a year to be used on his contract does it have to be 9 NHL games or just 9 pro games? Is it just a coincidence that he played 9 games for the Falcons last season?

Agreed. In another year that means nothing it might be nice to have an exciting player to play with Hemsky and take some heat off the rookies. As long as it's a short term deal(2 years MAX) that doesn't handicap the team once it's time to put the cap space to good use and making a run at the playoffs I have no problem with it.

With that said, it is another season that means nothing so why would he want to sign here? Does he really like Hemsky, Renney and Fleming that much?

I think it has to be NHL games? I'm really not sure though, I'm just remembering Jeff Carter and Mike Richards playing with the Flyers AHL team all the way to the Calder Cup after their junior years finished.

You may be right. Hodgson played in 11 playoff games for the Moose last season and I doubt the Canucks would have done that if the games counted towards the "9 games".

Good to hear. As I mentioned in another thread I hoped he would finish this season in the AHL. Then next season I hope for him to spend some, most or possibly all of next season in the AHL. We should have done the same with Cogs really.

If Eberle was to play for the Oilers now he'd have unbelievable pressure on him. Good move to start him with the Falcons.
