Upcoming Free Agency

I don't know about everyone else but I am already thinking about this years free agency. Who should we sign and who should we let go? We also should keep in mind about the cap space. Will it increase or decrease? This can affect our primary target of Kovalchuk.

Rangers include:
Girardi
Staal
Valiquette
Heikkinen
Byers
Parenteau
Prust
Christensen
Lisin
Prospal
Jokinen
Zaba
Shelley
Auld

For FA signings
Other names include:

Kovalchuk
Lidstrom
Niedermayer
Marleau
Morris (could be a possibility)
Gonchar
Tanguay
Savard
Nabokov
Kubina

Keep in mind that the Higgins + Kotalik for Jokinen + Prust freed up about $3 million.
Thoughts?

I am terrified at the prospect of signing Marleau long term.

Staal - keep
Valiquette - gone
Heikkinen - probably KHL
Byers - sign cheap
Parenteau - gone
Prust - wait and see
Christensen - unsure
Lisin - gone
Prospal - resign cheap
Jokinen - gone
Zaba - resign
My thoughts above.

I will go ape **** if we sign Marleau. Guy is Drury part 2. Second rate center that's going to get superstar money.

Hmmm...not quite. He had 38 goals last year, and already has 37 this year.

Playing with Joe Thornton. He comes here he'll struggle to net 20.

Ehh, he isnt as good as his point totals show but the guy has legit wheels and legit skills. I would say that without Thornton he is about a 75 point, 30 goal guy. Still a 1st liner, but he is definitely more suited to wing. If he took something like 5-5.75 million I would grab him in a heartbeat. But I doubt he will.

Do you recall the last free agent we signed that had 37 goals respectively back to back seasons? Hint, we signed him in 2007

No way, he isnt Drury part 2. If you watch him play, on some night, he is more dominant than Thornton. His speed alone creates chances and he knows how to finish.

Agreed.

And I have this awful feeling that if the Rangers can't get Kovalchuk, Marleau will be Plan B.

All that will go away the second he pulls that blue jersey over his head.

I'm terrified of Marlaeu as well, if there's any sort of intelligence in Sather, he'll learn from his past mistakes and stay the f away.

Girardi- trade for young F/pick at deadline (Mueller?)
Staal - keep
Valiquette-bye bye - nice fail
Heikkinen- keep (if possible)
Byers- tradebait
Parenteau- ev keep for callup
Prust - ev keep for minor raise. Wait n see
Christensen-ev keep for cheap
Lisin- trade or keep for cheap. ok with either
Prospal- deal at deadline - then keep if he takes a cheap deal
Jokinen- let go
Zaba- let go

Dump Rozie (trade) + Redden (God knows)

Sign Kovie, Volchenkov, John Scott.
N Wallin or Tallinder are other defensive options if Volchenkov is too expensive.

As much as I love Marleau it's a mistake signing him. He's hitting his peak now and he's playing with Mr. Assist himself, Joe Thorton. I just know if Sather signs him, he'll get $7M for years with a NMC.

We need to get rid of Rozi and Redden and trade for Tyutin. Also, since we have absolutely no gritty forwards on our team, I think Ott and Bertuzzi are good pickups. As for scoring talent, there's a lack of (big lack) younger goal scorers on the UFA market this year. Sadly, Marleau might be the only choice as far as goal scorers go, and, while the addition of him wouldn't be that bad, with Sather's signing skills, it would be.

agreed i would want him no more than 2 years at 6 mill per, i can always grind out 2 years with any given player especially someone like marleau that plays hard and is a lock for 25 ginos id say. and volchencov will improve our d.

Here's my 20 million dollar question, With all the hoopla of Ilya going to the Debs, what do you think Sather shifts his focus down onto the Lightning to pull a certain number 4 (Vinny) and bring in a legit center, which by the way is something we need more than a winger? WOuldnt surprise me in the least...
