Even if he is RFA after this year, and even if Anaheim didn't resign him or match an offer sheet, its a moot point unless Burke can get back his own 2010 (and presumably 2011) first rounders, and we know that Boston isn't trading those, certainly not back to the Leafs... Just let this dream of signing a big name RFA this year or next year go Leafs fans, the Kessel deal killed any chance of that.
The only way the Leafs get a premier RFA is if that player pulls a Kessel and refuses to sign with any team but the Leafs. This way the team owning the rights to that player has to work out a deal with the Leafs for that player's rights. Like the Kessel deal, before the trade goes down Toronto will negioate a contract with that player and agree on it in principle. Then the trade will happen and the Leafs can make the trade and signing offical.
I am hoping that one of Kesler or Ryan does this in the off-season. And the Leafs would be able to trade Kaberle and maybe even Grabovski for their rights and sign them to an extention. Then the Leafs can look at Armstrong and/or Torres up front and Z.Michalek on the back end to help replace Kaberle on the PP at a discounted price.
I'm also interested in Getzlaf and Perry. How much would it take for us to grab them too? Maybe if they throw in Blake as a salary dump it would work?
Seriously though, this is the kind of thing we need to be looking at. Bobby Ryan is a reach. It isn't going to happen. But a young power forward with hands or a young center with size is exactly what we should target if we decide to trade Tomas.
