Yes, AC would have been a nice compliment to Gabby though. Sure would have been nice. RIP Cherry.

Absolutely. Gabs is an NHL ready star scorer. Alexei was a prospect, albiet an excellent one, but who knows if/when he would have panned out? RIP Cherry

Why not? Cherry would not be making real money, so it wouldn't effect their ability to sign Gabby.

yeah.

im not really sure what one has to do with the other to be totally honest.

A.C. would be cost controlled for a few years...his death wouldnt impact Gaboriks signing whatsoever....CHere would just have made us a better team.

you have a point with the salaries. guess i was looking at it from a roster-filling and position standpoint being that cherry would have been the rangers first line RW for the future and that management probably doesn't think about getting gaborik at all

in which case, i'm glad gabby's here and RIP cherry

I'm pretty sure we would have still signed Gaborik. AC could have been a nice complement... RIP.

What does one have to do with the other?

Cherry was a promising prospect who would have signed at an entry level contract.Gaborik is a proven nhl-ready goal scorer. If anything they would have signed gabs to help cherry improve.

I dont even want to talk about this anymore, not that I'm ripping the thread creator but its just a shame what happened to this poor kid. What might have been, and I'm not talking selfishly, its a shame such a young kid in his prime passes away. Makes you want to appreciate what you have even more, and take nothing for granted.

I'm torn.. while it is a little morbid to speculate about the kids potential future, I think it's fine to at least be able to continue to talk about him, not just for the "keeping the memory alive" stuff, but to show that he really, severely is missed. That word is overused sometimes for deceased people, not in this case.

From a sheer hockey standpoint, the loss of Cherepanov left a void in the Rangers' system...top six RW. He would have slotted in right behind Gaborik on the 2nd line and provided secondary scoring this year.

I don't see why they wouldn't have. I think a better question would have been if they traded for Heatly knowing that they had AC & they would have parted with guys like Dubinsky & Cally. I think the trade would have happened.

Gaborik
Cherry
Callahan

that would have been an awesome top 3 RW
Always sad about AC

I would have said that if AC was ok, then resigning Zherdev would have been a non-issue

Its not like Cherepanov would have had a 5 mill dollar cap hit

If Kennedy didn't get shot, would Frank Sinatra Jr still have gotten abducted at Harrah's Lake Tahoe? How many licks would it have taken to get to the center of a tootsie pop if Ronald Reagan hadn't been shot?

The world may never know.

I've said before. All the people that complain that we don't have a top flight prospect in our system need to take a step back. We had one. There is no telling how much Cherry's passing set back our farm system. After he died we were picking in the late teens and 20's and there was really no one of his caliber to fall to us to take his place in system.

It's impossible to tell how different this organization would be. What could have been of a young mans career, not to mention his life.

All you can do with these things is learn from them, send your thoughts to Alexei's family, and move on.

RIP Chere, was looking forward to seeing you on Broadway.

Oh I miss him, and I dont mind a thread about him, it's just the fact that we missed out on a great player. Kinda like when Len Bias died when the Celtics drafted him. Who knows what might have been. I hate thinking about it because he was probably our best prospect since Kovalev and now he's gone.
