# 67 | Panthers vs. Avs | 7 PM MTN | 3 - 11 - 10

Quote:
Season series -- This is the second and final game between these cross-conference clubs. Florida surrendered a 5-3 lead in the final minute of regulation back on Dec. 2 at BankAtlanticCenter, but won 6-5 in a shootout.

Big story -- The Panthers look to extend their current winning streak to four games, while attempting to claw their way into the playoff picture. They will visit PepsiCenter for the first time since Feb. 6, 2007, when they lost 5-4 in overtime. The last time Florida won a game at Colorado was on Jan. 2, 2003. The Avs (80 points) have dropped two of their last three games, but are still sixth in the West.

Team Scope:

Panthers -- Tuesday night's 3-2 shootout win over the Minnesota Wild was a bit of a shocker for Florida, considering that the Panthers gave up two goals on only four shots in the first period. But they managed to hold the Wild to only seven shots over the next 45 minutes to set a club record for lowest shots against at 11. Michael Frolik and Cory Stillman scored in the third period and Stillman won it with the lone goal in the shootout. It was the 500th victory in the history of the Panthers' franchise.

"We played a good game, and I thought we deserved two points," coach Peter DeBoer said after the game. "It was a good team effort. We stuck to our system and stuck to our game plan, kept grinding away even though we weren't getting rewarded for it. We finally got a couple."

Avalanche -- Colorado has alternated playoff appearances since missing the postseason in 2006-07 so, according to this pattern, they should be heading back there in 2010. However, the Avs would prefer wrapping up their three-game homestand with a victory -- after beating St. Louis 7-3 on Saturday, they blew a 4-1 lead and lost 6-4 to Vancouver on Tuesday night -- a game that could have pulled them even in points with the Northwest Division-leading Canucks.

"(Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo) made some big saves for them but, bottom line, we got away from our game. That's what ultimately allowed them to get back in it," defenseman John-Michel Liles said.

Who's hot -- For Florida, Stillman is in the midst of a four-game scoring streak, totaling 2 goals and 3 assists in that span. Calder Trophy candidate Matt Duchene scored twice for the Avs on Tuesday and has five points over his last four games.

Injury report -- Nathan Horton (fractured leg) is on injured reserve for the Panthers. ... Avs forwards David Jones (knee) and David Koci (hand) are on injured reserve, while forwards Brandon Yip (shoulder) and Ruslan Salei (torso) are also out.

Stat pack -- Panthers' center Stephen Weiss needs two more goals to total 100 in his NHL career.

Puck drop -- One look at the League standings and it becomes very apparent who needs to win this game more. Considering that the Panthers have been the hotter team over the last few games, it will be interesting to see if they can carry that momentum into PepsiCenter. When teams play an inter-conference game, they can usually afford to leave with just one point but, at this point, almost every game down the stretch for the Panthers must be won in regulation.

Quote:
With one month left, the Florida Panthers know they're a longshot to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2000. More efforts like the one in their last game could shorten those odds considerably.

Looking for their season-high fourth straight win, the Panthers continue a three-game western swing Thursday night against the Colorado Avalanche, who hope former Florida goaltender Craig Anderson can put a bad loss and the memory of a scary injury behind him.

Florida (27-28-10) opened its trip with a 3-2 shootout victory over Minnesota on Tuesday. Michael Frolik and Cory Stillman scored in the third period to erase a two-goal deficit, and Stillman had the only tally by either club in the shootout.

The key to the win, though, was Tomas Vokoun. He needed to make only nine saves through overtime and turned aside all four attempts in the tiebreaker.

The Panthers are well outside the top eight in the Eastern Conference with a difficult stretch coming up. They will close their road trip Saturday in San Jose before facing Washington, Phoenix and Buffalo at home.

"We've got to go out and win ourselves. It's in our control," Stillman said. "We can't count on anyone else to help us. This is a road trip where we need to get five out of six, if not six out of six points."

A resurgent offense could help Florida achieve that. The Panthers have scored 14 goals during their winning streak, led by four from Frolik and two each from Stillman and Kamil Kreps. The club had managed eight goals during a seven-game skid from Feb. 1-March 2.

This will be Florida's first visit to Denver since a 5-4 overtime loss on Feb. 6, 2007, and the Panthers are 1-2-1 in their last four games there.

Barring a collapse, Colorado (37-23-6) will be returning to the playoffs after finishing at the bottom of the West last season. Getting in as Northwest Division champions is a distinct possibility as the Avalanche will be battling Vancouver for the top spot the rest of the way.

Colorado led the Canucks 4-1 midway through the second period Tuesday before Anderson allowed four unanswered goals. Vancouver added an empty-netter in the closing seconds to hand the Avalanche a 6-4 loss.

"I thought we came out and played strong in the first, we got the puck behind them. We were making our own chances and forcing them into some turnovers. We got away from that in the second, and that's what we needed to get back to doing," Avalanche defenseman John-Michael Liles said.

Anderson was Vokoun's backup with Florida from 2006-09 before signing a two-year deal with Colorado in July. Facing his former club for the first time on Dec. 2, he was involved in a collision with Panthers defenseman Keith Ballard late in overtime that caused Anderson's head to hit the goalpost.

Colorado went on to lose 6-5 in a shootout as the Panthers' Stephen Weiss recorded a hat trick and scored the only goal in the tiebreaker. Anderson missed the next four games with a neck injury, but he should make his 22nd straight start while trying to move closer to a franchise record.

Anderson's 33 wins are the fourth-highest single-season total in Colorado history. Patrick Roy holds the top three slots, including a franchise-best 40 victories in 2000-01.

Weiss has a career-best 23 goals to lead the Panthers this season, but none in two career games in Colorado.

Mountain Lions and Florida Panthers are not the same animal. The FP is a sub species of the Puma concolor.

I'm predicting that at least one goalie is destroyed in this competition, because Ballard the Destroyer is playing.

This is a must win as an Avs fan. We have to win the easier games going forward as we play some very very tough teams down the stretch.

Games like this should be easy points. Not saying they will be, but a pretty much sure-fire playoff team needs to get both points against a team with a losing record who traded away a few of their better players at the deadline.
