2010 UFA list

Was just looking at the UFA list and holy crap it's bad. No wonder there were only rentals at the deadline and no real big names moved

http://www.nhlnumbers.com/freeagents.php

In reality I can't see the Rangers being able to do much. Marleau and Plekanac are the top F options it seems. I understand why everyone wants Kovalchuk but the guy is going to take up so much cap space it's ridiculous.

Are we destined for a Demitra signing and a depth Dman?

......sorry for the 2011 title was thinking that season but yea its July 1st for the UFA's 2010

Yeah there are slim pickins' in the FA class of 2010. I'd say if we can't get Kovalchuk then don't waste our money on anyone and just re-sign Prospal, and ride out 2011 with what we have. I don't think it will be pretty, but there's no use wasting money on guys that don't deserve it *COUGH* DRURYREDDENROSZIVALGOMEZ *COUGH*.

Guys we should keep: Joker, Stall, Prust, Christensen, Auld.

Guys we should go for: One of Mara (Martin, Jurcina?), and Artyukhin/Boogard

Guys who we may dream about but would be crazy to sign here: Kovalchuck.

Prospal is a great player and I think important to this team (for whatever its worth - based on team performance, what does this really mean/matter?) but he has up and down seasons and would probably command a sizeable raise. Not to mention that he may just as likely be signed away from us before we deal with him.

I loved the way Mara played for us, despite his falloff this year - he may come cheaply. I don't know much about the other two defenders I noted, but they're cheap and Jurcina, at least, is a big boy. Likewise if we lose Shelly we will want a tough guy so one of the other two listed would be nice.

I just think because the UFA list so bad they will just sign a stop gap in Demitra to C Gaborik. Prospal will come back only if he accepts a similar deal and to be honest why should he not since TB is already paying him a boat load.

If Prospal wants to much then Demitra just steps into his spot

I agree Kovalchuk is too much. Also the more I look at the UFA list the more I think they may just suffer another year with Redden on the roster and play the kids hoping they mature after this year. Rozsival has value so he should be able to get moved to a team that will have plenty of cap space and can add 7 million over 2 years.

forwards wise, there really aint much out there but D wise there are a lot of talented guys. And i think defense is the thing that we most need to fix.

The weak FA class could be great news... or it could result in the usual disaster. Maybe the limited options forces Sather to stay away from FA altogether and just focus on building the team beyond next season.

Or maybe he does the usual crap and hands Ponikarovsky a 4 year deal for 18 million.

There are also a few defensemen on the list who are better than Wade Redden. In Sather's world that means we have to offer them more than $6 million per year...

Hopefully this is a good thing. Maybe, just maybe, Sather won't throw money away. I would go after a quality, physical d-man and maybe one forward (Frolov?). Save for next year, when we can go after solid forwards like like Semin, Patrice Bergeron, Mikko Koivu, David Backes, and Petr Prucha

I would love to trade rosie in the offseason during the draft to move up or get more picks.. Bury the crap out of Redden in Hartford. let some players like shelley and them run out..

Resign
Staal - long term @ 3m yr
Prospal - 1yr @ 1.5m
Jokinen - 2yr @ 3.5m
Girardi - 2-3yr 1.5m or trade

We saved lets say an 13m for next season by letting go of spare parts, trading rosie, and dumping redden in hartford. minus the 8-9.5m resigning our players. which would leave us with around 4m for next year.. we could use that money to try to sign volchenkov who i doubt will leave OTT tho, or sign hamhuis for 2.5-3m a year and bring up potter, hekkinen, sangs to play the 6th spot.

I know its not a drastic overhaul and we dont get any better in offense but why waste money on players who wont help us. spend it resigning our youngsters who will continue to grow and develop, get rid of rosie and redden and bringing in hamhuis who is young and more solid than both of them combined and finally bringing up another young solid dman.

Then we have our great draft pick from this year who could be seguin, and whoever else we draft, then the following year we have drury and other contracts who run out too. opening up another 7 or so million to be able to sign better FA in 2011

He'll probably stay in VAN, but considering they need to sign Raymond and Kesler (RFAs) this summer, I'd make a pitch for Willie Mitchell. THAT is what this team needs.

I hope they sign Volchenkov or Hamhuis. Either one would be a great addition.

I dont really love any of the forwards. Frolov and Ponikarovsky are probably the best goal scorers after Kovalchuk. I would sign Frolov at the right deal. He is probably going to get overpaid though so the rangers should probably pass.

I doubt they resign Jokinan he is already in Torts doghouse. They probably have to put Dubi back at center next year because of how thin they are and hopefully he and Anisimov have big seasons next year.

.

I have no reason to believe that Prospal is going to sign again here for cheap....just because the Lightning are still paying him some money. Why leave the kind of money you guys are suggesting he leave on the table? Cause he's having a decent season? Not likely to happen.

Prospal will get north of 3 million. Bank on it.

Jokinen is going to have to take a pay cut cause 5.25 is to much for what he has provided the last 2-3 years. I could see him getting 4 to 4.5 million.

Staying with centers, I would look to trade Drury (hopefully at the draft) and then target two guys Plekanec and Lombardi

I figure between Jokinen and Prospal we will get one of the two. My preference is to go with Jokinen simply because I do not want to commit multi year deals to players 35 and older. Prospal is 35 and WILL get a 2 year deal. Jokinen won't be 32 until December.

Jokinen, Pleckanec and Lombardi down the middle would be nice.

I hate like hell to say this but the two best values on the list may be Matthew Lombardi and Zbynek Michalek.

Now there's a guy I could get behind as a UFA signing. Michalek is fantastic. I can't see Phoenix letting him walk though, is that really a possibility?

Kovalchuk and Volchenkov are the only 2 that interest me. No Plekanec, no Marleau, definitely no Demitra.

I see us being very active on draft day.

With that being said. The guys I target in the offseason are:

Jagr, Plekanec, Volchenkov.

I don't see it.

If he is let go, Sather better send a contract at 12:01.
