I think you are underrating phaneuf ... guess you missed when he was canadas best defencemen in the world jrs, and did very well in the WC a few years ago.

but since you are using his salary as a reason why hes worse than white for an international tourney, it isnt surprising.

I agree with you that Phaneuf is better then White. But Phaneuf was great in the world juniors and then kind of plateaued. He's no defensive stud.

Damnit, that sucks. Although perhaps Eberle will get a chance to play next round, then.

Hopefully Eberle gets a chance to show everyone what he's made out to be.

Buddy ive watched Phaneuf as a flames fan ever since he was a rookie. He's OVERRATED.. He was amazing his rookie year than sorta just floated after that. searching for the one or two big hits a game.. he had a cannon from the point but missed half the time.. and he was a dunce when it came to defensive hockey. AND i said ian white is a better WELL-ROUNDED Dman. Dion was a one-trick pony.

Oh and like i said take a look at the stats
Dion: GP 81 G 12 A 20 P 32 +/- plus 1
White: GP 83 G 13 A 25 P 38 +/- plus 8

Phaneuf has huge name value but ive seen him and ian white face up against the best the West has to offer and White was the better defender. Phaneuf is a rockstar but doesnt mean hes the best dman in the league.

Steve Downie is terrible.

The only reason he even made the team is because he had a good season playing on Stamkos' line - but he's not even on his line at this tournament.

I can't believe guys like Matt Moulson and Dustin Penner didn't get an invite so that Downie could waste a roster spot.

thanks buddy, living in ontario, I am unaware of the western conference... Ill still take phaneufs 1 trick pony, which hitting is still a trick and white cannot do it, regardless 1 trick....

anyways white career high 13 goals in 83 games, phaneuf career low 11 goals in 80 games

white is a year older, yet has 121 less career points, 0 international gold medals, no first team all stars... but I guess being a fan of calgary beats anything stats say, cuz your glad hes gone for Ian "norris" white

edit... wait you said he floated after his rookie season... he improved the next 2 years, and was even a norris candidate after that

Penner and MacT don't play well together. Nonetheless, I do not know if that is the reason Penner was not invited/declined to play.

Canada can bring in 2 forwards and one goalie. We know Eberle will be taking Captain Canada's position. Who will Canada ice as their next ice skater and their next goalie?

Do you think Fleury or Carey Price will be in net. Who do we possibly have as a goalie that hasn't turned down?

they will prob add a goalie that is ok with being a backup, mason is doing fine and should run with this. I wouldnt be surprised if price went, maybe even an andrew raycroft type player, I really doubt fleury goes. all of this of course is based on certain teams losing.

as for the forward, id love to see cammy go, or crosby but I doubt crosby would go... staal is too injured he would be great there aswell.

I really doubt we'll see another Olympic-calibre playing coming over. More likely a guy like, say, Kunitz or Dupuis from Pittsburgh, Moore from Montreal, Giroux from Philadelphia, etc.

A good third-line guy who can play a role and fill a spot. We're not going to see top talent fly over after a disappointing playoff loss.

If Philadelphia goes out, Michael Leighton would be a good person to bring over. Chris Mason will be given the ball, but Leighton would be a good back-up and he hasn't gotten the chance to play much the past few months so he would maybe jump at the opportunity.

One of the reasons Canada is doing well and the United States is not:

The USA team's roster would have a cap hit of about $23,000,000 in the NHL.

The Canadian team's roster would have a cap hit of about $51,000,000 in the NHL.

In other words, if Team USA were in the NHL they would likely be the worst team. If Team Canada was in the NHL, it would be competitive.

By comparison, with far fewer NHLers, the Russian team has an NHL cap of about $32,000,000.

Apparently Stamkos is now hurt as well.

Looks like at least two more forwards and a goalie will be coming for Canada.

Let's all cheer for the Habs tonight, then. Fleury + Crosby.

Claude Giroux would be a good guy to have. While very young, he is very clutch

There's a few good Canadians on the Penguins that can make up 2 skater positions if we don't get Crosby. I honestly think Crosby will go, he's loves this tournament, Team Canada and wants to keep on playing. I hate his guts now, but hope to cheer him soon.
