Yeah, as a depth centreman that they take to give some international experience it isn't bad. He'd be no more out of his depth than Schenn was last year. Obviously not one of the best players that would theoretically be available though.
Who I think will get consideration (based on teams currently out of the playoffs):
Atlanta: Evander Kane NYR: Michael Del Zotto, Marc Staal Florida: Stefan Weiss, Nathan Horton, Bryan McCabe Tampa: Martin St. Louis, Steven Stamkos, Steve Downie Carolina: Brandon Sutter, Cam Ward NYI: John Tavares Toronto: Luke Schenn, Dion Phaneuf Calgary: Matt Stajan, Ian White, Rene Bourque, Jay Bouwmeester, Robyn Regehr Dallas: James Neil, Mike Riberio, Jamie Benn, Stephane Robidas, Marty Turco St. Louis: Andy McDonald, David Perron, Chris Mason Minnesota: Guillaume Latendresse, Brent Burns Columbus: Antoine Vermette, Steve Mason Edmonton: Dustin Penner, Sam Gagner
So just out of those names I guess something like?
St. Louis - Steven Stamkos - Steve Downie
Guillaume Latendresse - Antoine Vermette - Mike Riberio
Andy MacDonald - Stefan Weiss - Nathan Horton
James Neal - Sam Gagner - Rene Bourque
- John Tavares
Dion Phaneuf - Stephan Robidas
Jay Bouwmesster - Ian White
Bryan McCabe - Marc Staal
- Luke Schenn/Michael Del Zotto
Apologies if I overlooked some players. I think that lineup has a good balance of youth and experience. I don't think Vinny will go, not this year (same I think for Richards). Downie I know may be a surprise to some, but based on his play with Stamkos, I think they'll give him a shot or at least consideration.
I agree with this except Schenn should not be on the first pairing IMO and what about Lecavalier, St. Louis, Perry, Getzlaf, Ryan
Cuz i'm sure Marty and Vinny are p'oed at Team Canada for not being on the olympic team, bobby ryan is american, getzlaf has been banged up all year, Perry may just wanna chill, and how can Heatley play when he is going to be in the western final?
This is Canada's opportunity to make their ever-so-fanaticized "B" team that can compete for Gold; having said that, I can see a few Olympians that would accept the invite due to missing the playoffs or an early exit.
This is not my prediction, rather if I were to assemble the team (from teams currently out of the playoffs as of Mar 25th and none Olympians)
Penner– Stamkos – St. Louis
Neal – B. Richards – Whitney
Latendresse – Lecavalier – Bourque
Boyes – Weiss(Peverley) – Horton
13th Forward: Tavares/E.Kane/Gagner/Eberle
Bouwmeester – Giordano
Burns – Robidas
Phaneuf – M. Staal
7th Defenseman: Del Zotto
Obviously any Olympians who wanted to participate would bump some guys off the roster. (i.e. Nash, Perry, Bergeron, E.Staal)
(I think Getzlaf will have surgery on his ankle and won’t participate.)
Edit: I forgot about Matt Moulson, he has to be a consideration for sure
TSN is speculating on who will be selected to represent Canada at the WC and they suggest Downie might be coming along with Stamkos.
They've shown some real chemistry together and I gotta think there could be some backing to this.
They suggest a Stamkos-Brad Richards-Downie line but it would make more sense to name St. Louis to the team (which for some reason TSN assumes he wouldn't be picked as he's not listed in their projected roster) and take the whole line as one unit.
Why the hell does St. Louis keep getting shafted by "experts". He's going to be there for sure.
As for Downie...I dunno. He's obviously gone to another level this year but can his borderline style hold up under IIHF rules? What if he has one of his "moments"? I'd hate for him to get a massive suspension, especially if he's not done maturing yet, thus barring him from future competition.
I could see him on the team to start, depending on which teams miss, but maybe not after the first round of playoff teams get knocked out.
I would bring him. I'm not even one of his fans, I rather dislike him but he's a heck of a hockey player. Every great team had a villain like Downie. They just need the right leadership there to hold him in line. Maybe St. Louis is that guy?
Steven Stamkos – Brad Richards – Steve Downie
Nathan Horton – Stephen Weiss – Guillaume Latendresse
Brad Boyes – Andy McDonald – James Neal
Rene Bourque – John Tavares – Antoine Vermette
Francois Beauchemin – Dion Phaneuf
Marc Staal – Michael Del Zotto
Stephane Robidas – Mark Giordano
