So....... Legwand is making 4.5 million per year and is scheduled to make that through 2015, pretty good for a 4th line role player. What!?!?!?! I don't event think he's the best role player on the predators. I feel that since we are paying him so much trotz feels the need to put him on the power play which drives me crazy. His salary alone is stopping us from signing FA's. Just wondering what everyone else thoughts were on this Subject and if you think he will finish off his contract in nashville.

Dude, he's playing with SMITHSON and Ward. What do you really expect? On top of that, Trotz uses it as a "shutdown" line. He's clearly having a down year offensively, but there are factors to be considered. When he plays with offensively gifted players, he produces. A shutdown center is just as much a "role player" as a scoring winger. Not to mention that he's one of the few guys on the team that hasn't forgotten how to kill penalties.
So your telling be that he deserves to get paid 4.5 mil. There's a reason why he is on the fourth line with ward and smithson (both of which can kill a penalty as good as him and make barely half as much as him combined)

who said it is a 4th line? they get pretty good minutes for a fourth line.
we roll 4 lines. a 4th line normally gets 5-7 min a game.
we don't dress a goon. we don't dress any specialists. we have 12 productive forwards and a thirteenth in o'reilly that is a top 9 forward on most teams. we are in a good position right now.
you can make a case for him being paid that much, esp in a defensive system. you can make a case for him being overpaid.

He gets paid 4.5 because he's shown that when playing an offensive role, he can score 25 goals, in addition to playing defense. Smithson is in the midst of a career year in which he may score 9. Ward might some day top out at 1.5. It's not a coincidence that he's having a down offensive year when playing with offensively limited players.
So are you upset with the production of Dumont who is making $4 million and is counted on to be an offensive force on this team and is usually a defensive liability out there?

No. Just Legwand. 'Cause he SUX!
/end sarcasm
I have a feeling that as long as we have Legwand we will be having this conversation in one form or fashion.
I came to this thread thinking it was about Bobby Holik.
If you're that unhappy with Legwand just ship him to Oilers for Horcoff or to Rangers for Redden or to Leafs for Finger...
done, done and done.
For a defensive player he sure is scared to hit people. He is petrified of shooting the puck. the strongest part of his game was his passing which has gotten progressively worse over the years. We could definitely get a pk for much cheaper and free up money to sign a goalscorer which would improve our team a lot more.

Have you seen Horcoff's numbers for this season? What has Redden done since he left Ottawa. You'd take Finger? Wow.

there's no use reasoning with a Legwand basher. My STs are near one, and the stuff that comes out of his mouth every game is ridiculous. If a clearing pass gets intercepted, he immediately shouts, "OH, I THOUGHT HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AWESOME DEFENSIVELY, HAR HAR"

I'm not saying that he doesn't do anything good, I'm just saying that he is about 2.5 million dollars overpaid. If he wasn't our number one draft pick overall (second in the draft) he would never make that much. he doesn't do near enough to earn that salary and I don't think any other team would pay him anything close to that.

So adding Horcoff who is paid a million more a year is the answer? 11 goals, 17 assists and a -26 in 63 games. Legwand, 10 goals, 25 assists and a -1 in 69 games. You sure you'd make that deal?

A little sarcasm there..... your dancing around the issue. Do you think legwand deserves anywhere near 4.5 mil?
Wow. Just... just wow. Even the Klesla haters up here aren't that bats*** insane. You realize that with those first two, you'd be spending even MORE money on even LESS production and ability?
Seriously. Just wow.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Well, let's say this. If you'd trade Legwand for Horcoff and his $5.5 million salary then yes. Overall though, I don't think I would've paid him that much money but at the same time, I would've given him $3.5-4 million per season. Here's the thing, we expect him to put up offensive numbers with Ward, a guy who almost put up 40 points in his first full NHL season and Jerred "Stone Hands" Smithson who is what, a 30 point guy at best? I just checked, 16 points as his best season. Legwand is asked on a nightly basis to play a defensive role and shut other teams top lines down. For the most part, he does that job well. You don't need to be a heavy hitter to do that job, you need to be positionally sound. He is finally getting some PP time again here lately and his numbers should improve because of that. If you put Legwand in a role with skilled players, his numbers would be there but his role is determined by the coach, not by him so to judge him on what you expect as opposed to what Trotz and Poile expect out of him is unreasonable. We're fans and we love to nitpick, I've done my share of it but we have no idea what Trotz asks of him on a nightly basis. If it's to shutdown other teams top lines he does that job as well as anyone else in the league. Is it his fault Poile offered him that kind of contract? If you were him would you say to Poile, hey, I'm gonna be a shutdown center, that's too much money for that sort of thing, pay me less so it's fair to the team. just sayin'

It's actually $2M more - Horc's actual salary this year is $7M; Legwand's is $5M. Both of their actual salaries, interestingly, drop by the same amounts each time (so they're always $2M apart) until 2013-2014, when Legwand drops from $4M to $3.5M and Horcoff drops from $6M to $4M. The year after that, Horcoff goes to $3M... and Legwand is a UFA.
Of course, the cap hits are much closer than that, but I was given to understand that around here y'all care more about actual salary.

So you sit close to me, eh?
Nah, I think as a defensive forward, he's decent, but he is overpaid.
I just have personal reasons that make me not fond of him.

Yes. He plays against the other teams top line every game, ave over 18 minutes a game and is a -1 for the year. And he has had Smithson as a winger for most of the year. He has probably won us 8-10 games this year by keeping the other teams top line off the scoreboard.

it also depends on what your expectation is. If you fly off the handle and look at this season only, then obviously he's not worth what he's getting paid. However, if you look at the past few seasons, where he's either hit or been on pace before injury for 20-25 goals...combined with his defensive ability, then yes, I think he's worth 4.5. I think those two things combined in a bigger market would get him Selke consideration, actually.

I would take Legwand for Finger any day of the week.
I've been a Legwand supporter. But I'll admit to being intensely frustrated with the goal scoring drought and making several snide bagging on him type comments. Most of my frustration is with Trotz I suppose, but no, I don't think Legwand's had a great year. Maybe that's just not possible with his linemates. And he has played decent dee. I was very surprised by his contract, felt it was too much and too long. But if he stays healthy and we add some talent to play with him, it will pay off. In a few other markets with much bigger payrolls, he'd probably get about what he is getting.
He's a good player. I personally think he's gotten far too comfortable with the defensive role, because for awhile this year, a long while, when he'd have favorable matchups (no, he's not always out there against the top line, and some top lines don't play defense all that well) the line looked overly content to play cautiously on offense. Lately, he looks much more aggressive to me. He's hitting a lot of posts...
