Remaining Schedules

This thread is soley based on the Hypotheical situation of "WHAT IF"

I took the remaining games that Nashville, Calgary and Detroit has left and did my best to predict the outcome based upon each teams record against their oppenent for the year. IE.. Nashville is 3-0 against LA this year. Given that record, I gave Nashville the win & 2 points for their upcoming game against LA.

I know its hard to predict a WIN or LOSS in the NHL, but given the Red Wings havent been in this situation for quite some time, I thought it would be fun to play around with.

Here is what I came away with:
AS OF MARCH 15, 2010

Nashville ( 13 games remaining ; 5 games remain vs. Playoff teams)

Philly (L)
Minn (W)
CBJ (W)
@ St. Louis (W)
Dallas (W)
Phoenix (L)
Detroit (W)
@Florida (W)
LA Kings (W)
St. Louis (L)
@Detroit (L)
@Phoenix (L)
St. Louis (W)

16 PTS, throw in 2 OTL for total of 18 pts

81 current + 18 future = 99 total pts

Calgary (14 games remaining ; 10 games vs. Playoff Teams)

Detroit (L)
@ Colorado (L)
San Jose (W)
@ Minn (L)
Anaheim (W)
@NYI (W)
@Boston (W)
@Wash (L)
Phoenix (L)
@Colorado (L)
@Chicago (L)
San Jose (W)
Minn (W)
Vancouver (L)

12 PTS, throw in 2 OTL for total of 14 pts

77 Current + 14 future = 91 total points

Detroit ( 14 games remaining ; 6 vs playoff teams)

@Calgary (W)
@Edmonton (W)
@Vancouver (L)
Pitt (L)
St. Louis (W)
Minn (W)
@Nashville (L)
Edmonton (W)
CBJ (W)
Nashville (W)
@Philly (L)
CBJ (W)
CBJ (W)
@Chicago (L)

18 pts, throw in 1 OTL for total of 19 pts

78 current + 19 future = 97 total points

Nashville = 99pts
Detroit = 97pts
Calgary = 91 pts

Detroit would be in the playoffs based on hypothetical situations but in theory the Red Wings have a favorable schedule vs Calgary. Nashville also has a favorable schedule, while Calgary is playing more playoff cailber teams.

1) Who has the better schedule
2) Does the schedule matter as much to a team like the Red Wings, given they are healthy
3) Is is fair to say the Red Wings should come away w a playoff spot given their schedule..

Nothing else should be put into account other than schedules....

1/ nashville has by far the easiest schedule
2/ it SHOULDN'T matter so much to a healthy Wings team, but it isn't like they are playing awesome hockey even when healthy
3/ they should, but the schedule won't determine the outcome on its own

the avs can be added to the mix

@Blues
Flames
@Ducks
@Kings
Kings
@Coyotes
@Sharks
Ducks
Flames
Sharks
@Canucks
@Oilers
Blackhawks
Kings

i think based on your calculations the avs would cruise to the playoffs, but on the face of it, this is a rather difficult run-in with 8 matches against playoff teams and several matches with the likes of the flames and blues. i don't know that the avs are safe yet.

I thought about adding the avs but I left alone teams 5 and 6 for the benefit of the doubt

Looking at that schedule for Colorado, they shouldn't be given the benefit of the doubt.

That is a tough final stretch.

but sadly they have started the stretch well. and it looks like the preds are going to defy hockeytown93's logic as well.

sucks.

and indeed, avs win and preds win. the only good thing about tonight's matches is that the blues are pushed further out the picture.

My god Nashville are the kings of lucky 1 goal games. Just amazing how many they win by one measly goal.

Should be the Nashville Rinne's, that team is not special.

I wouldn't mind Howard and Rinne as our two goalies. but of course we have to stick with Os"omgepicfail"good.

Too bad Philly couldn't beat them, that would have given us an easy chance to get into 7th. But I think I would prefer playing the Sharks instead of the Hawks (how come Dallas are owning SJ btw?)

Rinne was an absolute stud last night against philly! Minus a game here and there (last time we played the wings would be one), the preds can turn into a defensive juggernaut in a hurry! Trotz'z defensive system is impressive, when all buy in, we can be very stingy.

Throw in consistently good goaltending, and there you are.

What is a "special" team anyway?

Team may not be special, but our ability to consistently compete while having the 3rd lowest payroll in the league is. I would also say we have a fairly special coach.... I hope you have enjoyed the smell of our asscrack as of late - Does it smell "special"?

Colorado aren't doing us any favors. Come on, it's Vesa Toskala! Hope the Hawks can beat Anaheim too.

Maybe it's not so bad that the Avs are losing. The Wings are 6 points behind them with a game in hand...

I rather stick with 8th spot and a 1st round with the Sharks. We have a good record against them and with our form and experience we could do well against them. I don't want to take my chances against the likes of the Kings, Coyotes or Canucks, where we didn't have great games against. Just get rid of the competition for 8th place as soon as possible so we can concentrate on the playoffs. I don't like the fact that if we lose the next game, Calgary are just 1 point behind us.
