Thoughts on Brett Carson.

Hello Caniacs, PensFan here. Long time Canes fan since the Hartford Whaler days, and primarily because of Ron Francis being my 2nd all-time favorite player to Mr. Mario, and of course, I am an E. Staal fan now. I haven't been able to watch any Canes games this season, due to the fact my cable doesn't pick up the games, and I am just too busy.

I am curious, just how good is Brett Carson? I picked him up in a keeper league and I have read up on him, but since I haven't seen him play and the info on him is far and few between, I was wondering if you guys can clue me in on how well he's done this year for you guys, and what kind of future do you believe has with your organization.

Is he a PP specialist? Nothing more than a depth guy. What should we expect in his better years?

Thanks in advance!

He's having a good season as a rookie, mostly more of a #5/6 type long term but he'll be a pretty good one. He may eventually become a top 4 guy, but we'll see.

As for the PP, I don't think we'll see too much production from him there. He's probably not the best option for a fantasy defenseman in a keeper unless it's an extremely deep league, but he does have some offensive ability. Good skating, decent outlet pass and he's capable of running the point.

Depending on who we sign in the off-season, I would peg Carson for around 20 points next year. He is a solid number 5/6 with potential to be a bit more.

He's been paired with Pitkanen these past 2 games. Interesting to see if this is a tryout of some sorts. As in, can he hold his own on the 2nd pair with Pitkanen and be our cheap top 4 replacement.

I think it is more out of neccessity that he is playing with Joni regularly. Its pretty clear Picard and Harrison have no business being in a top 4 role. They are a huge liability playing big minutes.....which leaves Carson as the only option for the last top 4 spot for now.

Wow I actually came here to ask the exact same thing. I'm in a keeper lague too and was wondering about him. He's 27according to TSN, how much better is he supposed to get? And what kind of Defensmen would you clasify him. I guess what I'm asking is can someone give me the pro's and con's of his game?

Are you talking about his age?

He's only 23, but he wears #27.

Strength:

Great Skater
Tremendous Reach
Decent Puck Skills
Above Average First Pass
Disciplined

Weakness:

Not Physical Enough
Bad During Sustained Pressure
Point Awareness
Zone Clearance

I think Carson has an equal mix of offensive and defensive flaws that make him an ideal candidate for split time on the second unit powerplay as well as the second unit penalty kill. He's a jack of all trades, master of none type defender. For his size, he's not nearly physical enough and he lacks conviction with the puck in all zones. How much of that is intimidation of the NHL speed has yet to be seen. He generally plays a mistake free finesse style defense and quietly eats up minutes. Rarely makes a jaw dropping play in either end of the rink. Lets the play come to him and sometimes misses offensive and defensive opportunities as a result.

I would say that his career upside is a strong 4th defender or a 3rd on a below average team. The biggest thing that needs to improve with Carson is his confidence. He's so afraid of making a mistake that his passive play becomes the mistake.
