The thing that I like so much about this show is the producers trusting their actors. A lot of interview I read with the EPs have a lot of "Oh that was Tim's idea" or "That was Walton's idea." The whole back and forth between Limehouse and Quarles over the shoofly pie was McDonough & Williamson's idea. I mean sure the writers have a script set, but the actors give suggestions and the producers trust them enough to try their ideas and not just stay with the writers. I'm sure there are other shows that do this, and most of the time those actors already have producer credits, but I think not only are the actors abilities making this a great show, but their ideas for furthering the story line help so much as well.

It's funny that Elmore Leonard seems to disagree with you, and he wrote the short story the pilot was based on.

Boyd is a fixture now. Killing him off would be ballsy, but remove the single most important dynamic on the show. I don't know how I'd feel about that.

That's assuming that Quarles did the shooting.

Well Boyd was knocked out, Johnny only had the shotgun, would be pretty easy to identify whether he did it or not. Can't see anyone else coming from nowhere to do it, but I hadn't even thought of that possibility.

I wonder why Boyd didn't take greater caution in chaining Quarles hands up though. Seems like a convenient way to write in his escape.

Wow, what another great season. Gotta feel bad for Raylan. Not only does his dad not even care about him, he would even try to kill him.

I think what he is talking about was that Boyd, the big baddy in season 1 was supposed to die like all the other big baddies they have had since. But, about a week or so before they shot the what would have been Boyd's last scene, the executive producer and writers got together and figured out that Boyd was a good part of the show, they decided to keep him around as a foil for Raylen and have fun with the role. I remember reading an article where they discusssed the fact that Boyd was to die, but they changed their mind at some point in time--they just can not agree on when

Not exactly the Showdown at Bennett Ranch, but a pretty solid finale.

Well, no. "Fire In The Hole", the short story the pilot was based on, had Boyd die from the gunshot in the end. They originally intended for him to die the same way.

He hasn't been on borrowed time, I think they're all pretty happy with that decision.

"He just saw a man in a hat pointing a gun at Boyd."

That last scene was awesome. Solid finale.

Every week I come in here saying that this show is criminally underrated, and here we are, another week and I feel the same way.

No way Quarles survives getting shot AND having his arm cut off, so he's gone...which is a shame. Errol also got shot in that scrum, wonder if he'll be back next season...a few enemies for Raylan in season 4, plus his dad in prison...and Johnny conspiring against Boyd. Should make for some great TV

I put the over/under on remaining episodes for Johnny at 5. His bluff wasn't very convincing, and I'm sure Boyd will figure it out quickly. I don't think they even needed to put that scene with Johnny and Limehouse on the phone either, they should've let us wonder about it until next season imo.

Great finale, what a gut punch to Raylan knowing his father cares for more about Boyd as a son than Raylan. "He just saw a man in a hat pointing a gun at Boyd."

So many great scenes this episode. Wynn's trailer, Raylan vs Limehouse, Quarles on the phone with Theo, Boyd's house, the final confrontation.

Could've sworn I already typed this but here it goes again. Something I didn't pick up while watching, but read about later.

That gun Quarles takes away from Raylan, "you can keep that one", is the gun Raylan took from Winona's house, that Quarles used to kill Gary. I completely forgot about that, didn't even make the connection when Art told Raylan that the ballistics match the murder weapon, and Raylan's indifference to that news.

LOL, they had the clip with Quarles' arm on The Soup

"Raylan took it too far when he started playing 'stop hitting yourself'."

I love that Quarles reaches for the arm, and Raylan just slowly keeps it away.

From what I understand, Goggins did the pilot as a favor to both Olyphant and FX. Having been a star on The Shield, he was a well known face to FX executives and fans. The plan was for him to die in the pilot as detailed in the short story. His performance was so strong that nobody could resist not keeping him around. Goggins had prior engagements scheduled during the first half of the first season's tapings so that's why he wasn't in more than a couple of scenes until later in the first season where he took on a regular role.
