Finally got around to watching the entire 3rd season that I had stored on my DVR. This show is too good. I liked Season 2 a bit better because Margo Martindale(Mags Bennett) was just simply amazing, but Neal McDonough was great too. When you get such great performances from guest stars such as those two combined with the already stellar performances of leading men Goggins and Olyphant it just makes for one hell of a show.

Season 4 gonna be so good if they run with some of the loose ends. Can't wait.

I loved McDonough role at first--but towards the end he got too far out. He was an interesting character to start off with

This show is a really great procedural. I'm just starting s3 now and it's like night-and-day how much better it is than other procedural like Burn Notice and the network ones. I figured Person of Interest was at the top but it's clearly a terrible show compared to Justified.

That said there are some "ugh" moments, like the s2 finale where Raylan's marshall's just save the day in the clearest example of Deus Ex Machina and he gets shot and manages to walk and talk and whatnot. Other than that, I have no complaints.

Except it's not.

Procedurals have case of the week stories that are contained within one episode and always use the same mold. You can watch nearly half the episodes out of order and it wouldn't change much if anything. Burn Notice is a procedural (someone in need of help goes to Michael Westen for help and we hear Westen's disembodied voice explain to us what's going on throughout the process and important characters are given titles in white), Person of Interest is also (number pops up, hero has to find why person was targeted and save a life), all 3 CSI, Bones, Criminal minds but shows like justified, walking dead, etc aren't.

Most shows aren't hard line procedural or serial though. Using your examples,
Walking Dead isn't as procedural as Justified.
Justified isn't as procedural as Burn notice.
Burn Notice isn't as procedural as CSI.

What's procedural about justified? I don't see how it's any more of a procedural than Walking Dead. There isn't a case of the week neatly tied up and solved every episode. I don't notice any repeating patterns with justified and I don't think you can watch episodes out of order. It doesn't have any of the characteristics of a procedural that I can think of.

Burn Notice has always worked under the same formula. One big theme for the season, and one random unrelated story per episode. 90-95% of all episodes have been like that. That's a procedural. Same thing with Castle, Bones, Supernatural, etc. I agree that CSI is the mother of all procedurals since they never deviate from the mold. But when a show uses the same formula in 9 episodes out of 10, it's a procedural.

There is no hardline between procedural and serial, it's a sliding scale.

Justified has gotten more and more serial each season, but there are a fair number of episodes in season 1 especially where the majority of an episodes story line is based on an unrelated plot. That's a procedural element.

And if Burn Notice is a point of comparison, it's not that far off of Justified. Each season of the show has had a central plot with each episode having a more contained story in it as well. Sometimes those smaller stories are related to the larger plot sometimes they aren't. The only difference is Justified's single episode plots tend to lead somewhere more often than Burn Notice's.

The same way, it's not fair to call Burn Notice a straight procedural because a lot of times over half an episode is not even focused on that random storyline. You'll have Mike and Sam working a job while Fiona and Jesse are tracking some lead. Cutting between both. This is even more true past season 4. Early in series it was true, the last 10 minutes or so would deal with the season's plot and the rest was all on the case that week.

If I had to put a number on it, I'd say Justified is 70/30 serial to procedural. Burn notice more like 30/70. Walking Dead basically not at all.

Justified is a serial with procedural elements, Burn notice a procedural with serial elements. Both shows are headed more and more serial.

Damn, FX, that was NOT an hour long. My DVR cut out right when Raylan went upstairs at the bar, was all that happened there that they reintroduced that he was with the bartender? Luckily I decided to DVR the 11-12 episode, instead of the 10-11, so I still caught the scene with Arlo in the prison with the other inmate.

Sucks for you... It was an incredible episode, one of my all time favorite episodes of Justified.

Only show that compares with this one, for me anyways, is season 1 & 2 of Dexter.

Epic quote.

Sons of Anarchy and Justified are the only action/drama/whatever type shows I watch on T.V. While I love love love Sons of Anarchy, I like how Justified moves a little slower through out each episode compared to the 5 gun fights SOA has on every episode.

I only started watching last season so I really need to watch Seasons 1 and 2.

This show as a ton of great quotes. All 3 seasons have been great but season 2 with Mags Bennett was the best one so far IMO.. Great show.

Gotta give the edge to the guy from last season IMO. Seeing his character transform from the first episode fo the finale was incredibly well done.
