Those were great Bernie!I hope Backlund's injury isn't serious, it's kind of weird but I'm a bit excited that we might get to see Backlund play.

Eklund is floating the idea that the Flyers could sign Esche. I know Eklund is full of crap, but is this possible? He'd have to clear waivers correct? Would he be eligible for the postseason roster?

I don't think he would be able.

Even if he can't play in the postseason...having Esche to close out the regular season would be a plus, IMO.

I agree although I am scared it would lead to a contract for next season.

I would enjoy having him as a backup...always came off as a really good guy (and the media icing was hilarious), and he's been playing quite well in Russia.

Signing him as a starter would be similar to other problems.

Agreed, depending on how long Leighton would be out. Prorated $5M contract to keep other teams from claiming him on waivers?

We couldn't pay a prorated $5M contract (due to LTIR, just add in the full cap hit for us). A 2nd year might keep people away though.

I'm not sure how many teams are going to be jumping on signing Esche at that, though.

There was only one other NHL team interested in Esche this summer so I doubt there will be much interest outside of Philly.

From an interview of an RDS broadcaster with the current habs GM. it looked like Halak was offered to the Flyers for 2nd round pick (i don't know which year) but the Flyer's GM turn down the offer. He does feel it was a trade that you are glad you are not making.

It would also be an incredibly dick move to claim a guy like Esche if you don't plan on using 'em. I mean, it happens in sports... but if Esche gets a shot to come back to the NHL, just let him get his chance.

I really think we should stay away from goalies that no one wanted and went over seas (felt the same way with Emery), and players that already played on the Flyers. We need something new, not the same people over and over.

For the next month...it's all hands on deck.

I have zero interest in Esche as a starter (would be fine with him as a backup). But I do think there's a good chance he's a better option than Boucher down the stretch if Leighton is going to be out.

Down the stretch Id be fine with that. Thing is though, say he does well. Homer loves these kinds of things. Eshe gets hot and we get to the second round. Homer then signs the guy for 2-3 years.

This is all if he goes through waivers and gets to us.

Just to play devil's advocate, what if we made a deal at the deadline and it was Vokoun, Halak, Turco...etc that gets hurt and is out for the rest of the season. Then we would be furious since we most likely would have lost Giroux, JVR, Carle, Gagne Carter and/or Hartnell.

I guess it could be worse...

Depends on the deal...if it was a deal with long-term positive effects, then it sucks but you move on.

Very true, I understand there could be long term positive effects, it was purely hypothetical. It is just my useless coping method that we have lost both of our starting goaltenders to injury.
