RFA contingency plan: Joe Pavelski?

Just had a flash while watching the Sharks-Canucks game tonight. Joe Pavelski, to me, looks and plays a lot like Tomas Plekanec. Futhermore he's younger, and may even have more upside, despite where he was drafted.

Let's say we offer Plekanec a 5M a year deal and he declines. Would it be foolish to offer Pavelski somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.25M a year for 4 years? We have to give up a 1st and 3rd, but IMO, that would be a solid deal for 2nd line center. The Sharks have a lot of money next year so they'll probably match, but i think the Habs should be very aggressive with RFA's like this should signing Plekanec not work out for us.

Thoughts?

Comon read the post. What if Pleks asks for more money than we're willing to give him?

My answer is yes to offering Pavelski.

The way our contracts are set up, we are in 'win now' mode. Therefore, we would have to salvage a chunk of our future for this team to get a center that can help our wingers play to their potential.

Pavelski is good player but we would have a very hard time getting him out of San Jose. If Plekanec leaves I see us making a trade for a center.

I want to keep Plekanec most, so I want Gauthier to do everything he can to keep Plekanec. However, Plekanec is asking for too high of a price that we just can't give him, then I would love to put in an offer for Joe Pavelski. He'd be a suitable replacement for Tomas Plekanec.

If the Sharks are letting Nabokov go, to keep Marleau, they could be interested in adding goaltender. Also with Blake contract ending they could have room for defenceman.

Halak+Spacek for Pavelski+Demers?

Or we could just pay Plekanec the extra $1M or so he desires so that we don't have to give away a crop of 1st Rounders + most of the money we would of used on Plekanec anyway..

4.25 would be too much for Pavelski imo.

Someone else mentioned him in the thread the player I would target if the Habs can't keep Pleks is Kesler. The guy has impressed me big time especially since the olympics but he will probably be more expensive then Plekanec and the Canucks would most probably match since they have the cap room

We can't afford to pay the extra $1m though, Pleks is not worth $6m.

It wouldn't be foolish, but the Sharks won't let him go.

We can't afford to give Plekanec 6M. Thats just ridiculous. Remember we have to re-sign Markov after next year and guys like Price and Halak won't be cheap forever. Furthermore, I still don't understand how he deserves a better contract than say someone like Marc Savard. The only think he seems to have going for him is the fact that there aren't many other good UFA centers besides him. You can't just give a guy extra money because of that. I wouldn't anyway.

Habs are going to have to dump (a lot) more than a million to keep Plekanec aswell as Moore/Metro and RFAs with the team. Thats how Gainey built this teams salary structure.
